Mulch!

Mulching is an excellent technique to conserve moisture and prevent evaporation from the soil surface. Spread a layer of organic mulch, such as compost or bark chips, around your plants and flowerbeds. This natural shield acts as a protective barrier, reducing water loss and keeping your plants hydrated for longer. Go the extra mile with your mulching efforts by choosing an additional layer of water-retaining mulch, such as straw or shredded leaves. This top layer acts as a natural moisture-locking blanket, preserving precious water in the soil. Remember to replenish the mulch as needed throughout the season to maintain its effectiveness.

Smart Watering

When water is limited, it’s crucial to water strategically. Opt for targeted watering techniques like drip irrigation (check that drip irrigation is excluded from the hosepipe ban first). These systems deliver water directly to the base of the plants, minimising wastage. Additionally, water your garden during the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late evening, to reduce evaporation and ensure maximum absorption.

Capture Rainwater

Make the most of every drop of rain by harvesting rainwater. Install a water butt or two in your garden to collect rainwater from gutters and downpipes. This eco-friendly practice provides a readily available supply of water for your plants during times of water restrictions. Use this collected water mindfully and sparingly, focusing on your plants’ needs.

Use greywater

Reusing washing-up water, also known as “greywater,” is a fantastic way to reduce water wastage and keep your garden green during a hosepipe ban. Opt for eco-friendly dishwashing detergents and soaps that are biodegradable and low in phosphates. This ensures that the greywater you reuse in your garden is gentle on plants and soil.

Choose Drought-Tolerant Plants

Opting for plants that are naturally more resistant to dry conditions is a wise choice during a hosepipe ban. Drought-tolerant varieties like lavender, rosemary, sedum, and agapanthus thrive with less water. Consider incorporating these resilient plants into your garden, and you’ll not only conserve water but also enjoy a colourful and vibrant landscape.

Implement Water-Saving Techniques

Adopting water-saving techniques can make a significant difference during a hosepipe ban. Grouping plants with similar water requirements together allows you to target your watering efforts efficiently. Regularly weed your garden to eliminate competition for water, ensuring your plants receive the maximum benefit. Additionally, avoid watering hard surfaces, like driveways, and use a broom instead to keep them clean.

Minimise Lawn Watering

Lawns are often the thirstiest part of a garden, requiring substantial amounts of water to stay green, however, during a hosepipe ban the lawn is the first thing I stop watering. It will go brown but it will bounce back in a couple of weeks after the rainfall comes.

You could consider reducing the size of your lawn by creating flower beds or adding hardscape features like gravel paths or patio areas. Or, go for a more natural, wildflower meadow that requires less maintenance and water.

While a hosepipe ban may initially seem like a challenge for gardeners, there are numerous ways to keep your it green and thriving. By implementing smart watering techniques, capturing rainwater, choosing drought-tolerant plants, and embracing mulching practices, you can conserve water while still enjoying a beautiful garden oasis. Remember, every small effort counts, so take the opportunity to make your gardens more sustainable and resilient for the future. Happy gardening!
