Product review – The Ecodek Heritage Range

Taking on timber – the Heritage decking range from Ecodek

When most of us think of outdoor decking, our thoughts immediately turn to timber. Although wood looks beautiful, it requires meticulous maintenance and has a number of negative attributes – for example, it splinters, it can fade in the light if not properly protected and can become slippery underfoot in the colder months.

But for those of us who love a natural aesthetic, there is no alternative. Or so I thought.

Wood Polymer Composite (WPC) is a material created from wood combined with recycled or sustainably sourced plastics. I’m sure most of us would have turned our noses up at plastic decking in the past, but it has progressed so much since it was first conceived. WPC decking, particularly that from Ecodek, a UK-based manufacturer of wood composite decking, both looks and feels like traditional timber.

Over the past 18 years, Ecodek has worked to design and develop a range of beautiful wood composite decking that looks stunning, requires very little maintenance, and features an array of positive attributes.

The Heritage range, for example, comes in a variety of nature inspired tones, including Welsh Slate, Cornish Pebble, Brecon Shale, Pennine Millstone, and Highland Basalt, allowing you to choose a deck that blends beautifully with your garden.

In addition to its lovely looks, the Heritage range offers a slip resistant, splinter free, and rot and split resistant alternative to timber. As it is a composite material it does not require any treatments and only an occasional wash with water to keep it looking like new. It does not become slippery when wet and you won’t be surprised by a splinter in your toe if you decide to go barefoot in the summer. It also comes with a 25 year product warranty, so will you have peace of mind that your beautiful decking will last for years to come.

‘Hang on, what about the environment?’ I can hear you all ask. It is a modern misconception that composite decking is far less environmentally friendly than wood. In fact, it is the more sustainable option. Ecodek’s WPC decking is made from 95% recycled and sustainably sourced raw materials, that are 100% recyclable, and Ecodek prides itself on being a carbon negative manufacturer.

As mentioned above, there is no need to use treatments, such as varnishes or paints which may release harmful toxins into the environment, on composite decking – unfortunately these are a prerequisite for protecting timber decking – and it is a misconception that timber decking can be recycled. When treated with chemicals, timber decking is not suitable for recycling at the end of its life and therefore ends up in landfill. Overall, the environmental argument weighs heavily in favour of Ecodek and its WPC decking.

So if you’re looking for the beauty of natural wood but without the hassle, head over to Ecodek and start spending your time and energy on enjoying your garden rather than working in it.
