This 10-day, west coast itinerary encompasses those key elements that draw international travellers to Canada year on year. Enjoy incredible wildlife, world class scenery, First Nations history and you’ll also spend some time in beautiful Vancouver. The winner will be spending three nights at the incredible Farewell Harbour Lodge; the ultimate wildlife viewing destination.

The holiday includes return economy flights from a UK airport and:

  • 9 nights’ accommodation
  • Private transfer to hotel on arrival at Vancouver Airport
  • Ferry to Vancouver Island

Vancouver

Starting in Vancouver, you’ll have a full day to explore this vibrant city – rent bikes and cycle around Stanley Park’s seawall; take a water taxi across to Granville Island and indulge in some delicious local produce, then grab dinner in historic Gastown. The drive to Whistler offers a first proper taste of British Columbia’s incredible scenery, travelling north for 2 hours on the Sea to Sky Highway with mountains on your right and Howe Sound on your left. Again, you’ll have a full day to explore – get your hiking boots on and head out into the pristine alpine scenery!

Whistler

Farewell Harbour Lodge

Now it’s time for wildlife fans to get excited!  After taking the ferry crossing onto Vancouver Island, you’ll have a night in Campbell River, known for its fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities, before continuing north for a three-night stay at the stunning Farewell Harbour Lodge. This wilderness lodge is located on the border of the Broughton Archipelago Marine Provincial Park; a protected wildlife area. Farewell Harbour is family owned and operated. You will enjoy exclusive opportunities with first-class naturalist guides to view grizzly bears, whales, dolphins, eagles and much more.  With only 12 cabins, you’ll feel like the only person in the world in this pristine wilderness.

I would like to nominate my sister Arlene, she works in a Doctors surgery and has throughout this whole Pandemic gone above and beyond working long hours and extra shifts to make sure the practice is doing it absolute best to support all its patients. In addition to this she is a carer for an old lady who is housebound, she does all her shopping and delivers medicines to her and makes sure she speaks to her on a daily basis as this lady has no family and is very lonely. We can all see how exhausted she is but she just keeps going as she doesn’t want to let anyone down. She could really do with a holiday.

I’m nominating myself. I am a medical secretary at Southampton General Hospital (although now employed by Portsmouth Hospital Trust but still working at Southampton). I feel we are the forgotten few! We keep the offices manned, speak to patients, try to arrange outpatient clinics for urgent appointments, keep other professionals informed of patients’ healthcare, deal with Consultants, etc on a daily basis who have come from wards/operating theatres, etc. Without “behind the scenes people” a Hospital could not run smoothly.

Her "never say die" attitude is always present, her work ethic unquestionable (I have seen her in action only last year when she nursed my gravely ill father back to full health) and if anyone deserves this prize for their contribution to the current Corona-virus pandemic, then it is Lesley. Thank you 🙂

As a retired NHS worker I worry immensely with both a daughter and daughter in law currently working on the frontline at two London Hospitals in HDU and maternity. I think this initiative is amazing especially as my daughter had planned to marry in August and now we do not know if or when this will go ahead. Any tiny kindness to show our appreciation to this amazing institution is heartfelt and treasured.

Now a retired NHS worker in the over 70s group, I value all our staff enormously. I still have many colleagues, friends and family working in the NHS right now and it will be difficult to chose but of all my choices I know they would all receive this gift graciously. Good luck for everyone. Sending love from Sue xx

My son and daughter in law who are both NHS workers at the Gloucester and Cheltenham Trust. Andrew is a qualified Physiotherapist with a particular interest in Respiratory care whilst Lucy is a Trainee Anaesthetist. Both of them have recently been working in the Covid ITU and HDU departments working long hours in difficult circumstances. Their 2nd Wedding Anniversary will be on the 14th of June 2021 and this would be a wonderful way for them to celebrate it.

We know exactly who should earn this holiday (not us, either!): a recently-widowed NHS & BAME doctor working in a conurbation - with a young daughter to look after.
Now, that would be something so special for them.

I would like to nominate April Fixter for you holiday. She is a very hard working District Sister Nurse. Who has to to travel from place to place to visit the patients in their homes. Some have been discharged early because the hospitals need the beds. April and her husband were planning a break this year. Just before the COVID-19 Pandemic started, and to be able to work they cancelled it losing most of the money they had paid, and I cannot remember the last time that they both went away on a holiday. They are my friends and have helped me whilst I have been in my 12 week isolation. They are very good friends, and deserve this holiday. Our daughter-in-law is a part time NHS physiopherapist specialising in helping stroke patients get mobile again. As part of her training some years ago she covered the use of respirators and as Covid started taking its toll she became full time working in the ICU with the most ill patients, giving them their last chance of survival. Despite not all of them recovering she has continued working as hard as she can, at the same helping our son look after their two young daughters, all without showing signs of the pressure she must be under. One thing is sure, at the end of this she will need a good holiday (we will look after the girls!)

My daughter and her partner are both front line paramedics/ECP’s and have put their own lives in danger to treat many Covid19 patients. They’ve lost so many patients to this horrible virus and are drained by the demands of what goes with all this. Luke has continued to work as a hands on nurse manager at a forensic unit with increased responsibilities, ensuring that each staff member is supported as an individual with their own needs and fears ! At the same time, his wife has increased her shifts ,often nights, to cover the staff absence due to covid19. This entails the two children going to school too. Increasing the risk of infection for all of them ,but, great for mental health! A true nursing family!

What a wonderful break this trip would be for her and her husbands, who also works very hard to receive. They are also very community spirited and have helped me a great deal since my beloved Husband passed. They are pillars of society working quietly in the background for the greater good. Although no longer working in an NHS Hospital, Nicole was seconded to one nearly an hour's travel away from home during this Pandemic. About 2 hours travel on top of a long and hard work day.
On arriving home, no matter how exhausted she was, the first thing she had to do every day was to strip off and throw all her clothes into the washing machine.
No matter what Nicole does she always does it wholeheartedly, and with boundless enthusiasm.
My wife and I have given her what little we could afford by way of thanks for her efforts, a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates, but If she could win this trip it would be magnificent thanks for her efforts.

Can I nominate myself. I am a cleaner working in Highbury Hospital in Bulwell, Nottingham.
I am not a nurse, or doctor or anyone that has been clinically trained. However, I find myself having to go in and clean affected rooms etc.
I wear masks, gowns and gloves each day and clean the wards.
I work in a mental hospital, so cannot keep to social distancing with the patients.
I have never taken a day of sick in over a year and I can work 20 or more days without a day off.
However, the reason I am asking if I can nominate myself is that, my sister lives in Canada and I would like to go over an give her a much needed big hug.
Our father has just passed away and because of the covid19, she could not come over to my fathers funeral, this broke her heart and I would like to hug her.
Stay safe everyone x x

My wife Louise is in her third and final year of GP training with the NHS in Torbay, Devon. After getting married last summer, we were delighted to found out she was pregnant in March 2020. The excitement was quickly shadowed with concern when COVID-19 struck. Given the choice of continuing to work on the frontline or remaining at home, Louise decided she wanted to continue working to support the nation's efforts. Every Thursday evening at 8pm I get the chance to applaud all our frontline workers, and indeed my own brave wife. A trip to the Canada would be a wonderful way for us to spend some quality time together after both my own job (school teacher) and Louise's NHS role have challenged us physically and emotionally....perhaps even visiting the Canada as a family of three!

I'm applying to enter the NHS win a holiday for my brilliant hard working partner Bev Hyde, a lead nurse who has gone beyond the call of duty during this pandemic.
Her selfish acts make her a great example of the traditions of Nursing.
Whilst doing all that she contracted COVID-19 and helped protect me as I am potentially at greater risk due to my ailments.
Kind regards,

Sandra is an nhs frontline worker and has been working on covid wards since the start of this pandemic often taking on extra shifts , she has had to self isolate fm her family to protect them and having recently split up fm her partner prior to this outbreak I know it hasn’t been easy for her but she has been amazing, never been fazed, she is loving and caring and always goes that extra mile so I def feels she deserves a treat/break for her to take some time to chill out and relax

Always under pressure she a pro at holding her nerve.

I nominate Dr Adil Jaulim who has worked tirelessly as a pathology trainee in ensuring specimens and cultures obtained from patients especially with coronavirus are dissected, examined processed and reported in a timely fashion. During his time in the pandemic he has shown resilience when working in the mortuary especially given the large number of deaths and deceased patients that same through to the mortuary for autopsies. This has been mentally challenging at times and has been a difficult task. Additionally Adil helped the bereavement team develop a rapid system to improve work flow during the crisis so that deceased patients could be united with their relatives rapidly. In addition he also helped to set up a safe rest hub for junior doctors working on COVID wards.

I’m nominating my son Dr Owen Bain who works in the Cancer Research Dept at The Royal Free Hospital in London. He recently had an operation for testicular cancer which had a negative affect on him physically and mentally. He had only just got engaged.
He still went in to work to release cells which during his PhD aided heart tissue when damaged.
These were taken by Courier to Bristol Infirmary to be given to a 2 month old baby who was born with heart problems.
These cells are temperature sensitive and he stayed in work until he knew that they had arrived and remained at the correct temperature range so the process could go ahead.
He was in pain that day but he still put his job before himself.

I'd love to Nominate Anna Scott. Who works at the George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton.
Despite having a 2 year old daughter and a fiance who has Crohn's (so is extremely vunerable) she has continued to go to work on the front line. Working mainly on the Respiratory Ward with Covid patients.
Anna and my Son, Mitch, are due to get married this September, so as yet we're unsure whether the wedding will be going ahead. But we know that due to lack of funds they haven't managed to arrange a honeymoon. So a trip to Canada would be absolutely wonderful for them. I'm sure by June next year Anna will be in need of some rest and relaxation after putting her life at risk to care for all of us.

I would like to nominate my incredible wife, Chloe, who has had many set backs that have just made an incredible person. As a teenager she had cancer, this resulted in her become a teenage young adult oncology nurse. She has always strived to be the best and in February she was just made team lead for an oncology trials unit in London. Just after her appointment she was hospitalised for a week and a half with severe breathing difficulties that teams couldn’t figure out what was wrong. After being discharged, not one to sit back she started helping by working from home whilst recovering and then went back to the wards as soon as she could to help the fight from the front line. She has now been told that she almost certainly had coronavirus and the road to recovery is going to be a long one. Whilst Chloe is no more deserving than any of the incredible nurses, doctors and healthcare professional fighting on the front line this would be an incredible and very deserved break for her.

I haven't entered as I don't know an NHS worker. I appreciate they are very frontline and most at danger, but I have a daughter who is in the Police entering houses no PPE, a daughter who looks after Mental Health patients (not NHS) - no PPE (her partner is a fireman), & a daughter who is a teacher teaching online but also in looking after other keyworkers children from numerous homes no PPE. They are all Key workers deserve a chance to be rewarded too.

My wife work as a receptionist on the main outpatients, she often goes above and beyond her role. She gets to know a lot of the patients as they have long term medical conditions and have to have regular appointments. she not only looks after people at work but looks after us her family too, our eldest son had cancer as a child and had to have a liver transplant, she held the family together as I couldn't cope, and always made sure our younger 2 sons were never left out. She is always doing things for other people, which I sometimes get a bit frustrated about , but that is who she is. She recently helped her sister in law sort out a surprise 50th birthday for her brother, to go to niagra falls, she would have loved to have gone with them, but we didn't have the funds to do it, she decorated our garden with waterfalls, mounties, chipmunks, moose etc, and they surprised him with his tickets on his cake,so to surprise her would be great.

My friend, Alison Gunn, is my NHS hero as she's been putting patients first everyday that she goes into work on reception at Kings College Hospital. She puts the cancer patients at ease with her warm and sunny personality and is just the sort of person who makes everyone's day better. She's a caring and fun wife and mum who cycles miles to and from work and she never complains about her long hours. Canada has always been top of her wishlist and I'd love to see such a deserving person win this amazing prize.

I would love to nominate my mum Vanessa. She is an A&E Nurse in the NHS and has been for over 25 years. She works such long hours, often without a proper break. Not only is she a full-time nurse and mother to two children, she also cares for our elderly neighbour, Marion, for free. My mum comes home from a long shift and cooks Marion her dinner, gives her house a quick clean and feeds her cat. She also does her weekly shop for her too. My mum is the most kind and caring person ever, who always puts others before herself. Her dream holiday would be to Canada so this would be fantastic!!!

I’d like to nominate myself if possible please?

Last month I celebrated 35 years unbroken, continuous service to our NHS. Currently I am working full time in the community as a paediatric nurse - supporting vulnerable children and their carers. I often end up working late, frequently I cover my colleagues shifts if they are unwell and I am always on call.

I am also mother to our four wonderful, clever and creative children, (all home from school, college and university) and a registered carer for my 97 year old uncle, who without our love and support - would not be able to live independently in his own home.
This year my husband and I celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary - all our plans are on hold - but 30 years ago when we got married we had our honeymoon in Canada. At that time I had an alternative nursing placement arranged at The Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto - and I would work my shift and then we’d sightsee together. Unfortunately, due to finances - we were unable to extend our break and quickly headed home when I had completed my allocated time.

To have the opportunity to return would be a dream come true!

Thank you.

I nominate my daughter in law Heather Mitchell who works locally in the hospital Intensive Care Unit. She is a mother of two young children and juggles her career with being at home looking after her family. She is a very industrious and caring individual who does so much quietly in the community to help others and never shouts about it. She and her family would benefit hugely from a holiday after this crisis passes. My thoughts are with all of those working for the NHS and for the carers in our nursing homes.

My sister is an A&E nurse who was one of the first in her hospital to be scheduled in to work on the COVID ward. Her fiancée is also an IT manager for the NHS who previously worked managing bed availability so they called him up to work on the COVID management hospital group at the start of the pandemic. He’s since helped implement technologies in the hospital to allow patients to talk to their families, sometimes as they will never see them again. They also have two children at home so definitely need a life changing break like this once the pandemic has passed.

My 25 year old daughter has been working on a Covid ward since the start of the pandemic. Her and the rest of her team were moved from their normal ward as they are respiratory trained. She has struggled with the mental side of it but has shown up for every shift with a smile on her face and given 110%. She is due to get married in June 2021 so this prize would make the perfect honeymoon.

I am nominating my good friend Sion who is an NHS nurse. Not only has he been working his normal shifts as a cardio and respiratory specialist, but he has been covering staff shortages in other departments, including A&E where he has treated people with symptoms of Covid-19 who have then gone onto test positive for the virus. Due to the increased demands of his job he has seen very little of his partner who is also working on the frontline as a police officer. Therefore, it would be amazing to win this prize for Sion, so that when this is all over, he and his partner can spend some quality time together taking in the sights of stunning Canada.

I nominate Nicola Roberston.

Nicola (Nicki) works incredibly hard and does long hours utilising her skills as a NHS worker with nigh on 30 years nursing experience.

She is full-time Commissioning Manager for the project team that is, currently, constructing the two new hospitals in my area. As well as this role, she also works as a Nurse Manager. As soon as Nicki does her full day's work on the construction project, she changes into her nurse's uniform and goes straight to the wards/control room to do a shift. This happens most days. She was doing this long before the Covid-19 virus hit and is continuing to do so.

Despite the long hours, she always came into work in the project office, next day, with a bright & positive disposition. Her laughter never fails to lift your spirits. I call her our office sunshine girl. She cares very much about her patients, her staff and her colleagues. Nothing is too much trouble for her.

Ali who works in UC in Portslade, Sussex. Is always bubbly, happy, hard working and goes out of her way to do the best that she can do for you. No matter what the situation is and how tired and exhausted she maybe. Ali always puts you first and surprisingly for someone who works in a job centre. You actually look forward to her phone calls. As her upbeat mood is infectious and no matter how low you maybe feeling before her call. Afterwards you are left feeling reassured with a big smile on your face. How many people go to those lengths to always put their client first and no matter, how tired or stressed she maybe. To always put you well fare and care first!

My sister, 60 years old working full time for the NHS for the last 25 years.. She believes she is not worthy as she is only a HCA! I have never met a harder working, more caring person, she listens to the elderly, takes time to explain to patients in pain and comforts those who have had long awaited treatments cancelled. Only a HCA, the lowest paid in the NHS and now being used as a porter, a cleaner, a trainer to newly qualified nurses, a blood taker and a counsellor. Only a HCA at 60 working weekends, 12 hour shifts, bank holidays and coming home to an empty house, shattered. Is there anyone more deserving?

He loves his job looking after children having surgery and he is just as caring with the parents . I’d love him to have something special to look forward to with his girlfriend who is a healthcare assistant. They don’t earn a lot so this would be a fabulous treat for them . I’m a very proud Mum

The special NHS worker is my daughter who is a paramedic based in Southampton. Although often exhausted she never complains, is constantly cheerful with a ready smile, juggling motherhood, housework and favours for friends around a complex shift pattern. Her husband is a headteacher who has had to continue to supervise key worker's children throughout the Lockdown and so-called Easter holiday at his school, so Claire had to continue organising family life through this very difficult time. Prior to the Lockdown, Claire managed to take her sons to their activities, including staying to watch club hockey matches in between shifts. She never refuses to help any friend with any request if she can possibly fit it in and I have never heard her moan about some of the call-outs she has had to attend, even though some might be termed 'un-necessary'.

My daughter is working with adult social care and she's finding the level of her clients stress quite challenging. She also looks after her grandchildren two days a week and is giving support to two other agencies in her 'spare' time. She lost her holiday this year so it would be wonderful for her to have something like this holiday to look forward to.

My Son Andrew is an ITU nurse. They do 12.5 hour shifts in those awful sweaty PPE s. His wife is a carer in a supported living home. Try telling a 20st. autistic bloke he can't leave his room.
They have had a traumatic few years. They got married 3 years ago. A week after their quick break away Katherine had a horrendous car accident and her lower arm was nearly severed. 14 hours of surgery by the 1st class surgeon at Birmingham hospital after helicopter air ambulance ride, re attached the arm.
They have absorbed the weekly and now monthly visits for various operations and physiotherapy into their work patterns.
They have a 7 year old who is being looked after by his older step sister who lives with them, while they both work long hours.
They deserve the honeymoon they never had.

But still feels her duty is to carry on helping others in her care. Yvonne is a loving member of my family. But also is a dedicated member of our
Nhs. Not just supporting patients in her care. She is part of a nursing team. Who are all supporting each other through a pandemic crisis. Which is putting herself at risk. To safe everyone in ICU. She feels for her children her husband. She goes through what ever she to do to safe patients. Yvonne is selfless beautiful and giving all she has of herself. To fight this invisible enemy Covid19.

I nominate my daughter in law who works as a shift manager for the NHS 111 service and has put in many more hours during this crisis even though she is a high risk herself because of her severe asthma. Her husband is also a carer not for the NHS and they have a six year old and a 20 month old to care for. And on their one day off a week together they go shopping for her Mom, her Mom’s neighbour and for me and my husband too. I think this holiday would pick them up a real treat once this is all over.

My lovely friend AB is a palliative care nurse at our local hospital. She works tirelessly to support those fighting the hardest -and often -the last battle in life. During these difficult times her presence is even more important than normal, when families cannot be there to support their loved ones -but she is there. Ive seen her look so tired as the pandemic goes from week to week. So this holiday would be amazing for her. As her hubby has also spent several years working in care homes, its something I know she could never afford herself. She was looking after the most vulnerable during the most difficult times of their lives before the current pandemic -and she will still be there doing the safe selfless work after the pandemic has passed and everyone else has gone back to 'normal'. She would tell you that she wouldnt deserve such a treat - but there are hundreds whose lives she has touched who would loudly disagree with her!!!

Hello

I’d like to nominate my partner, Piers. He works for the local Air Ambulance.

Piers loves his job. He has recently given up being an Air paramedic to be a road paramedic. There is a need for more people on the ground and he’s taken on the task. He’s transporting COVID+ patients everyday. Some of his colleagues have died along the way and I have no doubt how deep the devastation is that he feels. He continues to carry on with a strong face.

I’d like to say I can offer him comfort, but I am also an NHS worker. I work in critical care and surgical wards as a Physiotherapy Assistant. Our workloads in fighting COVID-19 have meant we’ve seen little of each other. We’ve even cancelled a previous holiday he had his heart set on.

Piers deserves good karma, because he is a good soul. He’s a true humanitarian and a hero. All too often unsung.
