Win ONE of THREE copies of ‘Very Heath Robinson’

You could be in with a chance of winning ONE of THREE copies of ‘Very Heath Robinson’!

The book takes a nostalgic look back to the world of William Heath Robinson, one of the few artists to have given his name to the English language. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the expression Heath Robinson is used to describe ‘any absurdly ingenious and impractical device’. You will find plenty of them here. Very Heath Robinson is full of quirky contraptions for lighting cigars, making coffee, extinguishing candles and generally making everyday life easy. You can even mow the lawn in comfort thanks to the super deluxe Ransomes’ motor mower, complete with wireless, drinks cabinet and tiffin table.

Adam Hart-Davis is the perfect person to set the artist’s mechanical fantasies in context, to tell the stories of rapid technological and social change that lay behind Heath Robinson’s idiosyncratic brand of satire and to laugh along with the jokes. Known for his popular television series What the Romans Did for Us and other programmes on the history of science and engineering, he is an avid fan of Heath Robinson and full of stories that lie behind the pictures. His love of Heath Robinson is endorsed by Philip Pullman, who conveys the charm of the Heath Robinson repertory company, the earnest, top-hatted men who oversee the machines and are ‘convinced they are being rational and clever and up-to-date’.

A dozen collections of Heath Robinson’s work have been published over the last 80 years, starting in his lifetime, but most have been compilations of pictures with minimal text. Very Heath Robinson is the first to explain the technical and social background out of which the pictures grew and to weave art and history into a connected story. It portrays Heath Robinson as the visionary he was, foreseeing technical advances decades before they occurred and commenting wryly on urban issues such as traffic jams, litter and flat living that regularly niggle us today.

PRESS REVIEWS

‘Other reviewers have commented on the text and some have mentioned the images but no one has yet communicated what a lovely book this truly is. Printed on uncoated paper the text is readable, the crisp images pop off the page, the overall size is huge leaving plenty of room for the gorgeous images. This book would be considered a marvel of bookmaking in any age. It is more spectacular now given the low quality of most books. It has found a treasured place in my collection of automata books and art. Be aware that this is a b-i-g book. It wouldn’t fit on my glass fronted bookcases. It needed to be shelved with other oversize art books. And rightly so!’
– J. Freedman, Amazon.co.uk customer

‘It may sound like a hefty price tag but the book is well worth it! It’s a huge book that’s packed with humorous information and amusing images. Beautifully produced and a joy to flick through.’
– Siobhan Rothwell, Waterstones.co.uk customer

I have about 10 Wonder Books of .....Trains, Electricity, Inventions, Ships, Aeroplanes (note spelling!!) from the late 1920's to 1938 that were Sunday School prizes for an uncle. The front and back leaves of each book has Heath Robinson drawings and they are very imaginative. The aeroplane book has an open top aeroplane, bi-plane of course, like the old charabanc and tea is being served from the back by a rack and pinion system to the front! He was ahead of his time and forecast some future inventions that no other people could conceive of!

Strangely enough, having not heard a mention of Heath Robinson for many years, his name came up on tv as a quiz question. I was trying to explain to my son exactly what he was about. I seem to remember, as a child, seeing one of his amazing machines actually constructed and working, somewhere - though the memory is hazy. If I don’t win this book, I may well have to buy a copy!
