Inclusion versus decency and equality.Have either of you two seen the latest video of Germaine Greer speaking on this issue? Very forceful rejection of this woke agenda. It resonated with me that newly trans women haven’t done the years of apprenticeship at being classed second or less worthy let alone the women’s body issues from puberty. Find me a newly trans woman who has experienced debilitating pain every month for 30 years followed by a potential 5 years of brain fog.interspersed with massive hormonal spikes if she has born children. I suspect newly trans women might rethink when they realise they will be working harder than men for less money and get a smaller pension at the end of their working life.ViewDate:

PenpalHello Frank - I greatly enjoy this forum but haven’t been on it for ages. I have 2 American friends already. One in Paducah and another Virginia I think. She is adventurous and has been in France for the last 10 days. I lived in Paducah for 2 years. I now live in Yorkshire in the Uk. The weather here is wet and cloudy and has been for the last 2 weeks. When I see images of Sicily, Corfu and Rhodes burning it seems unreal. I am 71 too. I don’t paint miniatures or have a dog but enjoy history and visiting historical sites. I am a widow with grown up children and grandchildren. This week I saw the film Oppenheimer - not a fun film but it led me to researching Los Alamos and the various scientists there including some British ones. I look forward to your reply..ViewDate:

Are you deterred from going on a cruise or happy to keep sailing? The air conditioning filters on cruise liners are not of the standard to eliminate airborne spread. Should the need to isolate anyone occur there would be no aircon available to ensure airborne spread is minimised. This is what happened in Japan and the passengers stuck in windowless rooms must have been desperate. How the cruise liner companies get round this will be interesting. I can envisage a section of the ship being converted into isolation units on a separate higher grade filtration unit with dedicated staff etc. This doesn’t address asymptomatic passengers. Costs might be astronomical. Perhaps the cruise companies will change their business model to attract the young or families who are likely to survive a ship outbreak.ViewDate:

Are you deterred from going on a cruise or happy to keep sailing?Yes, Phian , I agree. The unreliability of other cruise passengers and holidaymakers or air passengers or pub visitors is putting me off venturing far at all. All these covid 19 compliances are on the part of the suppliers of the event or facility but the users must conform to a new set of rules. I am not sure if I have that much faith in my fellow man.ViewDate:

I'm a lost newbieI am a nice person and enjoy interesting chats. Not sure how this site works as to whether we should decamp to the chat section or what. My husband attends a Men in Sheds group locally which gets him into some male company and some good chats. Through this group he has been into an infant school for the first time ever, attended a council meeting and other new experiences. Might be something you could look at or even start. I will investigate the chat section. Establishing a rewarding pattern in retirement is quite a challenge. I holidayed a lot up til now. We also had a caravan for a bit. It got too exhausting wheeling water about and winding handles but was fun whilst it lasted. Both of us have been retired about 10 years now and it has flashed by worryingly quickly and the ravages of failing health have begun to set in so our walking days are over. What about you going on a walking holiday for singles? I am sure you would meet up with lots of interesting people. Getting your wife away from the tele might be a goal too. Long Stay HolidaysI did a winter stay in Dubai quite successfully. The weather was not too hot and we stayed in an apartment hotel. Taxis very cheap and lots of exciting food to try. The luxury hotels were accessible too although ours was very reasonably priced and had a mixture of nationalities staying there - mostly Lebanese and Indian families and some European temporary workers. My 2 winter stays in Cyprus didn’t suit as I had some atrocious weather in December and January both times and the accommodation was so poorly insulated it was like living in a garage. My pattern to date has been November in Cyprus on a 6 week long stay hotel deal. To Paphos rather than the Eastern end. Christmas in Uk and then mid January when the flights get cheaper to Emirates until the end of February. Back to Uk and then to Madeira for a month. I had friends who did winter in Cyprus ie October to December and then to Florida until March and then back to Cyprus until May. Another friend set off for Perth in Western Australia every November by ship. An apartment was then rented in an apartment hotel and a cruise back to Southampton in March. She actually lived in a seniors development in Kent so it was an easy lock up and leave here in the UK. I spent a winter in Perth too and had a great time although it got a bit too hot for me. Fremantle would be my choice if I went back as it is small and friendlier with a vibrant arts scene. I flew there via Singapore. All this might be a thing of the past however as travel becomes both riskier and more difficult until the world recovers from Covid 19.ViewDate:

Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad - 1900Well, what a coincidence! I was just browsing through and saw your post on Lord Jim. I too found that book a hauntingly beautiful read. It was about the only book I had when I was teaching English in Macedonia in the 70’s. I began to write letters home in the style of Conrad. I must of read those first few chapters 10 times. A few years later I was able to work in Singapore and visited Indonesia several times which again reminded me of Conrad’s book. I think I have carried his written images my whole life. Then, blow me, you are another w8man! Hope this comment reaches you as I see we are a couple of months away from each other. My best wishes to a fellow 8man.
