A Winter Escape

Ahh, remember the days…

A Winter Escape

Like comets we slid
through the crisp, white grass
In our wake billowed
a powder-puff mass

It floated and swirled
and twinkled with light
Like low-hanging stars
broke free of the night

And in snow-laden fields
angels were made
A concertina of limbs
in the snow where we lay

We rolled and we frolicked
and snowballs were thrown
Not caring one jot
if we were soaked to the bone!

Then, with frozen hands,
a snowman was made
With a carrot for a nose
and a hat, old and frayed

He had acorns for eyes,
and twigs for a smile
And around him we danced
and sang for a while

…until arthritis swelled joints
And our limbs were too sore
And the nurse from the home
Couldn’t take anymore!

We all limped away
as the kids we once were
Filled up with the joy
only childhood can stir

And, over my shoulder,
I sneaked one last glance
At our friend the snowman,
who continued to dance! ☃️
