Can You Even Imagine

A poem for anybody affected by Alzheimer’s or Dementia.  Either directly or indirectly.  Such a cruel disease. ❤️

Can You Even Imagine

Can you even imagine
How scared you would feel
If you lost sense of reality
And no longer knew what was real

At times, in your mind
You are fully au fait
But in the blink of an eye
You are far from OK

You’re aware how your struggling
But you still have your pride
You are fighting dark demons
Which you try hard to hide

Sticky notes, they pile up
On the fridge, walls, and door
Just gentle reminders
Relied on more and more

Names start to elude you
But you don’t understand why
You’re afraid and feel alone
As you break down and cry

Your mind, lost in fog
And you feel like you’re drowning
As this illness progresses
You’re then faced with sundowning

Your family, they love you
With every ounce of their being
But you know there in pain
And cannot bare what they’re seeing

The curse of dementia
And Alzheimer’s, for sure
Will keep wrecking lives
Until we find a cure

Hold on to each other
Yes, just hug a little tighter
And let’s hope for a breakthrough
To make all our futures brighter
