One day

One Day

I walk the fields, and feel the heavy soil
Beneath my feet.
I raise my head and look to the sky
Gaunt bare trees stand along the horizon
Like silent giants watching mankind.

I hear the birds, no sweet singing now,
But the harsh caw of rook and crow.
I push my hands deeper in the folds
Of my coat
And feel the rough texture against my skin.
Where am I walking to?

I don’t know
I can’t remember.
One day I will lift my head
And see the trees in leaf
Hear birds singing their dawn songs
And I will have found my way.
Until then I walk in silence
And wait.
