Schooldays

It’s been a long time since my schooldays
Such a long time ago
I walked to school each morning
In rain or hail or snow.
I played with my skipping rope
Or marbles on the way
So if I won a big one
I would be happy all

We were not allowed to  be late
Well you could not explain
For teachers then were very strict
Sometimes we got the cane.
Over forty children in one class
But we all sat  and listened well
To answer a question, your hand went up
And we were always ruled by the bell

Uniform must always be worn
Although it was costly to buy
Yet all the families made an effort
As most wore the old school tie
School for me was long ago
But I remember it so well
I loved my schooldays very much
For I was taught how to write and spell

I also taught  how to sew and cook
While learning my ABC
I finished school when I turned fifteen
But I didn’t get a degree
Yet I know how to behave myself
And common sense I attained
Oh yes! I remember my schooldays
For all the things that I learned
