The Invitation

The Invitation

I’d sent the invitation out with hardly any hope
to ask the Queen if she would like to come to tea.
In eager anticipation of an afternoon of chat,
home made sandwiches, scones and jam, just her and me.

The reply came really quickly, she was delighted to accept,
four o’clock on the fourteenth would be just fine.
Then I panicked I can tell you, just three days was all I had
to both spring clean and shop for food, would I have time?

I decided that the first thing I should do was clean the house,
’til it sparkled, nooks and crannies, all were swept.
Then with Pledge in hand and dusters as I polished top to bottom,
there was not one single speck of dirt I’d left.

The next day I did the shopping, Tesco’s Finest on my list,
some smoked salmon, gammon ham and soft brown bread.
Twinings tea and some champagne, clotted cream and strawberry jam.
Twenty bags of all things tasty – enough said.

On the morning it was stressful as I put it all together
and laid the table with fine China for the visit.
Then as I dressed in my new skirt and a frilly spotted blouse,
I calmed down and told myself, “Try not to fidget!”

By ten to four I was quite ready as I heard the doorbell go
and the Queen in pale blue at last arrived.
“How delightful.”said Her Majesty, as she bit into a scone,
“Are they homemade?”
“Why, yes of course they are.” I lied.

She looked at me a bit old fashioned as she took a second bite
and I asked if she would like more jam and cream?
And at that moment came a buzzing in my ears. Oh what a fright!
I woke up and realised – t’was all a dream.
