The Pumpkin

Trick or Treat

I stand before the flickering grin
Lit by candle placed within
What disrespect is shown to us
Who long ago turned back to dust

This night for us is always sacred
But every year gets desecrated
Down the path they’ll skip and run
Each child bent on having fun

I hear the shouts, and laughter too
“Trick or Treat” they holleroo
From our graves so dark and cold
Tonight we rise, both young and old

And then as souls we’ll walk the earth
But never to indulge in mirth
Long since passed I may be, but yet no fool
How dare they mock me, ridicule

I summon all my energies, focus on the ghastly head
And send it spinning down the path
And they all scatter, screaming,
being the terrified children they really are
