Have you played Wordle?

Everyone is talking about the five-letter word game that makes up the hit online puzzle Wordle

Wordle is an online brain teaser that lies somewhere between a crossword and a sudoku puzzle.

The game, which is free and was launched in October, looks simple and friendly.

The objective of the game is to guess the secret word in six tries, using a series of hints to figure it out.

  • If any of your letters are highlighted as green, that means that you’ve got the right letter in the right place.
  • If any of the letters are highlighted as yellow, that means that those letters are in the word, but they’re currently in the wrong place.
  • Finally, if any of your letters are highlighted as grey, it means that those letters aren’t included anywhere in the secret word.

The free and simple game was created by software engineer Josh Wardle. It was released last October and now boasts millions of players. It has just been announced that The New York Times has purchased the popular word game Wordle for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Users are now being told to stay alert to bogus versions of the game, and a Wordle warning has been issued to players.

There are suggestions that copycat versions of the game could trick users into “malicious scams”. The game is free to play and the creator has assured users that the game will remain that way. So beware of any clone apps that ask for money, as these are likely to be scams – read more here
