Is it time for a woman to play 007?

Former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan has said it is time for a woman to take on the film role.

The Die Another Day actor was speaking ahead of Daniel Craig’s fifth and expected final outing as the British spy.

Daniel Craig

“I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years, get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there!” Brosnan, 66, told the Hollywood Reporter.

“I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting.”

But he suggested that franchise producer Barbara Broccoli would not be up for the idea.

“I don’t think that’s going to happen with the Broccolis. I don’t think that is going to happen under their watch,” he said.

Filming for the next Bond film has begun in Jamaica, as well as in London and at Pinewood Studios.

Dr Who is now played by a female so is it time to have a rethink about 007?

What are your views?  Would you like to see Jane Bond? Is it time to have Bond ‘boys’ instead of Bond ‘girls’? Or are you happy that 007 remains a man?

Is it time for a woman to play 007?

James Bond is a man, unless he is going transgender, he will always be a man. Why not just have another agent with a different 00 number.

To stay true to the whole concept, surely it has to be a man? Why not create a completely new franchise with the main character being a woman. So many characters that are created could not be fulfilled by a member of the opposite sex. Create new not reimagine old.

I dont care who does it next just so long as they arent as miserable as the current incumbent.
To stay true to Fleming it should be a white male but if it's a green one eyed alien in a silver suit that injects a bit of humour back in to these films , I might pay to go to the flicks to see it.

I’m all for that. A new edge to Bond, Jamie Bond. More intriguing, more style, more sophistication. Totally new method of problem solving, fighting and of course killing the perpetrators.
It’s not all about sex but even those scenes would have a different take. Not all relationships are straight. The mind boggles with alternative story lines on Flemings masterpieces,
I can’t wait. License to Thrill!

Why? James (it's in the name) is male. Do we need a Mr Marple?
Ridiculous - if women want action packed James Bond type roles than somebody needs to write an appropriate scrip for them.

Diversity coupled with a change of direction! Add spice and interest to a dying franchise! Why not. I’d go see the movie without doubt.

The romance wouldn't be the same. It is not considered right for a woman to be the first to make a romantic move on a man.
Bond is a womaniser after all, a charmer, a playboy. Public opinion would be against a woman making hay whilst the sun shines so to speak.

As already posted below, Jodie comer would make a great female “Bond”, just a variation on her character in “killing eve”, doesn’t necessarily mean there can’t still be a James Bond, didn’t Roger Moore and Sean Connery both play the part around the same time ? May be wrong !

Maybe the time is right for a non-binary, trans, gay person who is self identifying as a bond girl to take over the mantle from Daniel Craig.

....... should keep just about everyone happy! 😉

The producers can make a female lead Bond movie but whether it will cover it's costs at the box office is another matter.

Maybe, a one off female lead will hugely damage the brand, the franchise.

There's a lot more at stake than just a feminist issue.

Absolutely NO WAY. If it happens i will not be watching.

JAMES BOND is a MAN and always should be.

Would I want a male actor to play Wonderwoman or Catwoman ?
NO WAY. They will always be played by an actress.

Did you notice that I deliberately used the word 'actress' ?? Why
do some females refer to themselves as actors ? Actress is a
much nicer much softer word. Some things really do irritate me, and I am probably showing my age !! Late 70's and still old school.

The best thing to do, if people want a 'female' type James Bond,
is for a well known author to write a book about a female Israeli spy
called Jane Bernstein and then sell the film rights to someone. It
should be a winner as the Israeli's Mossad don't take crap from anyone, and can also dish it out. I'd watch that..... wink, wink.

NOT being sexist, 007 was written as/for a man not a woman. I have been an avid James bond fan from the start, read all the books , seen all the films, it would not be a bank holiday or a Christmas without a bond film being on, I watch them every time one is on i'm afraid should a female bond appear then I will not watch any new films, also have to say I was the same with doctor who, watched them all from the very first one , they decided to put a woman in and I have not watched since , I am not alone in this as a lot of people I know are the same. there are a lot of films and series out there which have female leads and these work, but would not work if replaced with a man,

James Bond I believe reports or reported to a FEMALE BOSS. So the BOSS wants to get out from behind the desk and "get some action".

The female BOSS is the more complex and cunning thinker shrouded in deadly poisons and other underhand ways. Remember Mata Hari was incredibly successful in real life and not some figment of fertile imagination.

Females are very different to males in more ways than obvious body differences. So lets see the full on woman using all her feminine skills, charms, killer instincts and rages to get the baddies.

Have we not all learned yet that the only constant thing in life is change and as a 70+ male .... lets rise above the grunt mentality and use our great intellects and embrace all human kind. .... Unless of course they are baddies.

Enjoy life and be happy be healthy and above all be a liberated you and fly.

For heavens sake!! I get fed up with women bleating they want to be included or do roles like Bond which wasn't written for them. T.V. is dumbed down because programme makers insist there have to be so many more women in roles particularly in police dramas for example and I know I'm going to get outrage hurled at me but come on! With Radio 2 now dominated in the mornings by Zoe Ball wittering on in her gushy fashion to the new drama The Capture with the lead trying to be roughy toughy I'm losing the will to live! Dr Who is a prime example, I was glad a female got the role but the content was disappointing which wasn't her fault but it didn't do the role any favours. Best get the tin hat on and duck.................................

Interesting comments and I agree to a degree. Not so many men want to play more feminine roles or have a movement to but then it could be argued men are not repressed. Just let me ask my wife what she thinks!!!!...If I dare!

Sorry Lionel I am writing with my toes after my fingers were broken with a rolling pin which was also used by my wife to see if my ears could be rolled flat to my head!!! As I said above I do have an opinion really (after I have checked with the wife). 007 needs to do battle with the wife-Golden Gun vs the Rolling pin-no contest I am afraid!

Easy to create some publicity for yourself by making a statement like this..It's fiction why not create a modern day female secret agent if people really feel equality matters so much in the fictional world.Likewise with age I don't let gender influence my enjoyment of a good film, book or TV programme. The real world well that's a different story.

Absolutely not. 008 or 009 maybe if your fantasies unto that. Fleming wrote Bond as a man of his type and time, sexist, amoral and flawed. There are plenty of "PC" secret agents, Bond is a classic and should adhere, as close as possible, to Flemings description.

Ian Fleming wrote James Bond as the archetypal public school student who went on, as many did, to join the UK security services. Why would we want to change this? Is it because women feel they want the equality? But why?

I am very sure that these roles are now available for women in today's services but leave James Bond as he is.

Ian Fleming wrote Bond specifically as a male, why change that ? Just cos, we can, or it's " the right thing to do, in this age of gender equality " I think the next perfect 007 would be Tom Ward, who played one of the pathologists in Silent Witness.
He's tall, dark haired, lean, suave, and has that slight sardonic smile Sean Connery had.

The world is changing so fast I would not be at all surprised to see this happening-"Bond-Jessica Bond" well we could get used to it I suppose. Who would be Moneypenny though? Some male secretary I guess and M-Maybe one of our older actors. Will the film studios take a bet with this. Well 50% of the world are women so they may like a Jessica Bond?

Oh Please.....James Bond is a fictional hero. Men would like to be him and women to be with him. Why destroy the illusion. There is no way he is meant to be anything but a universal hero. It is whst it is..

We have already come down the road to rendering our society the laughing stock of the world (apart from the USA of course). We have been brain washed, some have any way, into turning what is not acceptable into the normal let us keep some semblance of normality in our fantasy world of James Bond.

Dame Stella Rimington, real life female Bond type spy for MI5, who is now 83 and whose Judi Dench character "M" was based, says...

"I don’t like to see the female characters behaving exactly as the men would do," she says. "I think that the part should be written differently because women do behave differently from men even though they’re quite capable of doing the same sorts of jobs. It is a more subtle thing than just replacing a guy with a gal to make it look modern."

To that end she doesn't agree with Bond ever being a woman.

"And I do hope that nobody will try to turn James Bond into a woman. I think that would just be too ridiculous.''

Yes why not we live in an equal society and I read the other day that the new head of Cyber Intelligence in the UK is a lady in her 40s. But who would do it? I would think she would have to be an unknown.
