Which queue do you choose at Passport control?

If you have a new biometric ‘chipped’ passport, you can use the automated ePassport gates instead of having your passport checked by a border officer.

This should mean that you can avoid the queues and get through passport control more quickly …. but does it!?

What experience have you had with the automated ePassport gates?  Has it made your journey through Passport Control any quicker?

Which would you choose?

I find that most people head to the machines but few can use them properly - even with a staff member explaining it.
Due to the blockages that causes I find I can get through the manual control as quick as the scanners.
That's my past experience at Birmingham - Luton is a completely different matter!!!

I use the machine. It's a lot faster, providing I put my passport down the right way round!!!

Unfortunately I have never used my current passport and its due to run out. Human or machine it really doesn't make a difference providing I would be able to get away from our dreadful weather sometime.

Would choose human everytime. Machines put people out of work and refuse to use them.

Would choose the machine every time - unfortunately with kids under 18 you have to go via a human being.
Always frustrates me the queues are generally longer for us than those visiting .....

I agree, Jo. The machine was much quicker for me. My wife does not have a chip in her passport yet, so had to use the human option when we recently returned to Heathrow.

I was waiting for 30 minutes for her to get through.

Incidentally, the machine was more friendly than most of the border force officers I've experienced in the past. If it had a coin slot, I'd have tipped it!

Human always as the new automated ones at Gatwick never seem to work? Why doesn't someone sort out passport control in the UK it is a total joke. Come in off aircraft and 90% of the time there a huge queues. Answer get some more officers on desks-simple you would think?
