Should WW2 veteran NHS fundraiser Tom Moore be knighted?

BRITONS are calling for 99-year-old veteran Captain Tom Moore to be handed a knighthood after he raised more than £23 million for the NHS by walking 100 lengths of his garden with the help of his walking frame just two weeks before his 100th birthday!

He said he never anticipated his walking challenge would gain such huge support and result in an “absolutely enormous” amount of money raised.

He added: “It just shows that people have such high regard for matters of our National Health Service and it’s really amazing that people have paid so much money.”

Originally planning to raise £1,000 for the NHS, Mr Moore has now raised 23,000 times the amount of his target.

He told BBC News: “It seems almost like fairyland to think that we started off at 1,000 to a sum of money that’s not believable, is it?”

Originally from Keighley in Yorkshire, Mr Moore trained as a civil engineer before enlisting in the army for the Second World War, rising to captain and serving in India and Burma.

Mr Moore, who recently had a hip replacement, told the BBC: “I never imagined anything like this, but I’m so pleased, and I hope it just goes on because the services I got from all these doctors and nurses was absolutely outstanding.

“And they’re such nice people too.”

We shared Tom’s story via our Facebook page, and so many of our members think that he deserves a knighthood by the Queen along with her special birthday card.

What are your views? Do you think Captain Moore should me made Sir Tom?

Absolutely he should be knighted! What a wonderful gesture of his own initiative that caught the attention of the world -- and at a time
when we were all in need of something uplifting.

A more worthy candidate for a Knighthood I cannot imagine.

Had a great idea but at the end of the day it was media driven. Would not have got anywhere near the amount of the press not got hold of it. I admire the guy for what he did but there are loads of others doing the similar things that the press don't tell us about. lets keep a level view.

Maybe those that voted no, just don't believe in Knighthoods and not that they dont believe this gentleman deserves one. I voted that he should get one. Just because he is far more deserving than the rag tag of celebrities and others who have been awarded Knighthoods in the past. I don't really believe in the system at all. Many throughout the country are doing wonderful things without recognition.

I voted no, not because he didn't deserve it but for two reasons. One: it will be a short lived honour due to his age. I just hope it lives on in that hospitals and/or wards are named after him as a permanent reminder. Two: his fantastic efforts have been used by the government to deflect from themselves. Even the day the honour was given, the news of it overshadowed yet another catastrophe by the government.

Captain Tom is an inspiration to us all and definitely deserves a knighthood.
As a family we have so much to thank our marvelous NHS for, especially this last week as our son was admitted to Croydon Hospital with a life threatening condition and is now home with medication after receiving wonderful care and treatment from those dedicated doctors and nurses who are working flat out to cope with Covid etc.
All I hope and pray is that once this virus nightmare is over that this present government will not go back to imposing the stringent cuts they made to the NHS and Staff and the care sector in general

I agree. There are some people who say he shouldn't be knighted but what the authorities should do is give out a lot less knighthoods-to civil servants and MPs for example who get paid to do the job anyway (and in a lot of cases do it badly)

No question....it’s about time that people who actually DO something for this country, rather than preening celebrities, singers...etc etc....do get recognised. I’d also like to see top surgeons and the like, receiving high awards. If this pandemic has shown us anything at all it’s the people who actually put their lives on the line and care for other people that matter most in a crisis......all the celebs, footballers, with their high earnings etc come down to not very much at all!.....quite dispensable in fact.

I do not think your comments are fair and are actually quite insulting. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and just because it does not confirm with yours does not make it any less valid. However, can I suggest that if you read a number of earlier comments on this topic you will see that some people, including myself, do not think that a knighthood is sufficient to honour Captain Toms achievements and that he deserves some higher and special recognition. PERHAPS that is why some people have cast a ‘no’ vote and not because he does not deserve a knighthood.

Hi JE, I am truly sorry that I have offended anyone, not least yourself. I certainly wasn't intending to come across that way but I agree, reading what I wrote through again, I can completely understand what you are saying. I would like to add that I did agree with another comment on this subject, that a Knighthood should only be the start of Captain Tom's recognition, she suggested that every City should have a road named after him, also on new housing developments to name a road after him as a lasting tribute to a marvelous man, Sir Tom Moore Way does have a lovely ring to it and in the generations to come they would be so very proud of their grandad, great grandad,. great great grandad etc. A knighthood would be a truly deserved privilege but naming Roads, buildings etc after him will be a living memory. I hope that this now corrects the impression I gave earlier. Once gain, I apologise for any offense that I caused over the achievements of an amazing man.

If Tom were given a knighthood it would just vanish upon his death.
In my opinion a far better way would be to have a fitting tribute that will remain forever. A hospital, preferably near his home town, should be named after him with his name over all entrances, also a plaque detailing his fabulous fund raising activity, together with a note about his war record. This would be a much more lasting fitting tribute and an opportunity for future generations to read on a wall plaque of his achievements.

He's a remarkable man but he's getting on a bit now so if he's going to have a Knighthood then I think it would be a good birthday present, not to wait until the usual time of year as we don't know how long we'll have him around for and a posthumous Knighthood isn't much good to him!

Tom should get a knighthood for what he has given to this county. Not only the NHS but to England during ww11. He gave years of his life during the war. I'll bet he will not be given a knighthood as he is not a footballer or movie star or someone who can buy one. Its all wrong how they are given. It was for valour, not playing a game and making lots of money. What ever you are given or not Tom Moore you will be remembered by the people of UK. Bless you.

It would be great for someone who has really done something worthwhile for other people rather than just a famous name or blessed with a natural ability. He is a lovely old man who is doing something to the best of his ability for our National Health System I wish I had the ability to do the same. If they had made patterns available for all sewers to make scrubs or anything else that was wanted I could have helped as could thousands of others but nobody thought in such a small way for all it would have turned into a very large contribution. I hope in future smaller help will be considered.

An easy decision, Imagine comparing him with Bercow as deserving of an honour. He represents a generation who "asked not for what his country could do for him but what he could do for his country". Selflessness is not an old-fashioned ideal to be sneered at, it is a standard that we should all aspire to, but few fully achieve.

Here's a link I found to getting a knighthood.

I am sure the lord mayor of his town and NHS can do something about it.

Well I think.

Someone should raise it by now at the NHS or the fundraising administration department.

If all else fails. Silversurfers.com and we as a group. Should put it forward.

I'll go with that Wilf. Why not push the Crown for his knighthood?

In my view, if we can give gongs to self serving actors and sportspeople then this chap certainly deserves one for such a selfless act.

What a wonderful inspirational old gentleman. I am not sure that a knighthood is the right way to recognise Captain Tom’s achievements and as Yodama has already said, I don’t think it would make a bit of difference to him at his time of life. He deserves something more special and unique in recognition for what he has achieved. Let’s all get behind him and contribute to his cause to bring the total even higher. Maybe the NHS could put his name to something eg a hospital ward/wing in recognition of his achievements. Perhaps that would make him feel prouder than a knighthood could.

Quite agree, the NHS does in fact name hospitals after local heroes.
Near me a WW1 hero who rammed a German U boat was captured by them and was subsequently tried by them and shot. The hospital has his name officially, and a plaque.
So lets have a hospital named after Tom

I admire your ambition!! Would not have a clue how you would go about getting a hospital named after him.
I think that whatever is decided upon needs to be done quickly whilst he is still around to see the depth of peoples pride, admiration and appreciation of his achievements. I understand that Prince William has already sent him a personal message which I feel will have given him some pleasure. Boris Johnson has also remarked that something appropriate will be done in recognition of his achievements.

This gentleman is an absolute legend and so deserves to be knighted for what he has achieved. The clapping for the NHS and key workers should also be dedicated to him. I am humbled by what they are all doing. Bravo Captain Tom Moore!

Normally when I see a “ Sir “ I have to admit that I have a strong feeling of disdain towards that person.
A title used by the self appreciating, back slapping establishment to reward their own, or high achievers in sport or other entertainment who will have been well financially rewarded.
Knighthoods are rarely awarded to people whose efforts have benefited the general public.
What a lovely suggestion that this deep thinking gentleman be knighted.
He has my utmost respect and admiration.
Let’s all support this agenda.
Has anyone proposed this on Change.org
I would expect that millions would support this and those in the establishment would bow to public opinion.
Sir Tom Moore.
Now that is a title that would fill me with pride, respect and happiness.
A very special gentleman who indeed has served his country through war and this current battle.
Respect.

100% absolutely yes. Awards should be given to the people who actually do something worthwhile instead of vacuous 'celebrities' and fat cats who do nothing above and beyond what they are paid to do. We've all worked hard without expecting medals. This man is unbelievable and thought needs to go to the struggle and sheer bravery for him to do this at his wonderful age. Give him a gong and also reward all those who have done selfless deeds to keep the rest of us going. Every health worker / carer, whether they are in hospitals; homes; surgeries - they need to be officially recognised. Delivery people; posties; pharmacies delivering medicines; small food outlets who have diversified to keep us fed; people in adminstration jobs; and so many more invisible people to thank and acknowledge. They have kept us safe, fed, and supplied. In my eyes, these are all true heroes.

He deserves a Knighthood, and a phone call from the Palace, and every honour we can give him. It’s a wonderful thing he is doing, and he is a brave and generous gentleman.
But wouldn’t it be so much better if the government had funded the NHS adequately ahead of this crisis, so it would have been better prepared and equipped, and didn’t have to rely on the efforts of a 99 year old man?
