Do you support the idea of a bridge spanning the English Channel?

Boris Johnson’s idea of a bridge spanning the English Channel has split opinion but is technically possible, experts have said.

Dr Kostas Tsavdaridis, associate professor in Structural Engineering at the University of Leeds, said constructing such a bridge was “doable” so long as issues including waves, water flow and depth, wind strength and soil condition were properly planned for first.

However, issues including the weather, shipping and the financial implications could make the concept a less-than-practical reality.

It is thought that a bridge could be challenging for vessels crossing one of the busiest shipping channels in the world, sometimes with limited visibility.

Dr Tsavdaridis said he would use such a bridge “but only on the good days of the year”, as conditions could be harsh.

He said any seismic action in the area would not have a significant effect on the structure, and it was being mooted for the narrowest and shallowest stretch of the channel.

At 20-plus miles, it would be one of the longest bridges, but “it has been done in the past”, he said.

The world’s longest bridge is the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge in China, which spans just over 100 miles.

So what are your views? Do you think this is a good idea? Would you hope to use it? Or are you happy with the tunnel and sea crossing options we have now?

Do you support Boris's idea of a bridge spanning the English Channel?

We are an Island, we do not need a bridge.
It would need to be very high to let the cruise ships that get bigger every time a new one is built to pass under. A sitting target for bombers that like blowing us up, and for letting more unwanted so called refugees in.
We have a tunnel, make that enough.
We need more important things first before we even think of a bridge.

Very mad idea. It's the most busy shipping lane in the world. The idea of it was scraped in the 60's because of the shipping there.

Even more illegal immigrants scrabbling over underneath the bridge! Don't fancy this from a safety aspect. Someone do us a favour and silence this clown!

Can see it being a money pit & end up costing shed loads more than estimates not to mention the cost of policing the border from illegal immergrants who will have even more opportunities handed to them on a plate !!

What a possible waste of money. If the Government has so must spare money, I am sure there are better things to spend it on that will benefit all of the British People.

This is not a new idea at all it was banded about in the 1950s there are lots of long bridges like the one connecting The kingdom of Saudi Arabia with Bahrain ,

The only difference with the Chanel is the very busy shipping lanes !!!!!!!!

Crazy idea, when it gets windy, they will close it causing huge traffic jams that wouldn’t be there if there was no bridge.

A properly policed bridge would release ferry traffic, allowing lorries a much cheaper and more effective means of crossing the channel. The danger posed by illegal immigrants would be far outweighed by the increase in trade and tourism.

In the event of a war it is easily blown up.

What a mad idea: we have enough problems here already with an NHS not fit for purpose any more, hundreds of roads needing resurfacing , too many homeless people with no where to go but we can spend all this money on a bridge which will just bring in more people to put more pressure on our services . What ever happened to common sense ?

Although a technical possibility the cost would be immense, I would rather see another tunnel. The restriction for shipping would be most unwelcome making passage to North Sea ports very difficult.

Well said. Let's get this lovely land fixed up first. As said below, the Channel Tunnel runs at 50% capacity at peak times, so what usage could a bridge attract? I certainly wouldn't use it, the Tunnel is bad enough.

This country can't stop illegals now! Also, if they find that much money, put it into the NHS and our security forces, pensions, police forces. A bridge to the continent would only be another fantasy and target thought up by an Idiot.

Not sure how it would work with us driving on the left and the Europeans on the right. Besides the channel is busy with shipping. Probably not a great idea from Boris. Who would pay for it probably need to be the private sector.

Based on the usage of the Channel Tunnel, 50% at peak periods, any study of the bridge's cost effectiveness could not possibly indicate a profit. The Tunnel has made meager inroads into it's construction debt and some years runs at a loss. It's getting near time to renew the rolling stock. Is it worth it? I think not.

Considering the Tunnel as a car driver using it we were herded like cattle into stiflingly hot cars and disgorged the other end gasping for fresh air. The passenger cars were disgustingly dirty.

Considering a Channel Bridge, consider how many times a year the Queen Elizabeth Bridge over the Thames is closed because of high winds. No, the idea may be technically feasible but most unlikely to see an operating profit.

How can he even consider such a stupid idea when the nhs is desperate for money. Our country's needs must come first. Plus it would just be another way for illegal immigrants to try and get over here. I never wanted the tunnel so definitely don't want a bridge.

No we don't need such a stupid idea . The Channel Tunnel was bad enough. Better to close it from our end when we eventually leave the EU. Why make things easier for illegal immigrants to enter the Country too
Apart from the astronomical cost which we would end up paying. The entire thing would be a danger to shipping , in rough seas.

Absolutely not!

And neither should be think anymore about HS2.

As far was the bridge is concerned ... the Channel Tunnel runs at 55% capacity in peak season. It has not repaid much of the cost of construction, has had it debts restructured at least once and only exists on State funding because it's a State utility. Use the Tunnel first to demonstrate a need for this Boris Bridge

Someone said in the press, that would have been a perfect job for Carillon if they could have held out just a little longer!

I woud say it is not a good idea it would be too expensive and is not neccessary, i think it would create much more problems for the country. My suggestion would be a few long span bridges in the UK to take the pressure of our motorways..

Scandiman says it all, and I think the majority of our readers would agree with him.
Having used the channel by boat in winter and, what with the pitching and rolling of resonably large vessels,it would be a very difficult journey and hazardous to dodge the bridge piers.

We already have, estimated of course, we already have nearly a million illegals here.

Yes but if we have normal passport controls this should not be an issue. The main thing is it would make it so much easier for us all to get to the continent. Just drive over in 30 minutes-bliss.

Passport control does not work. The Immigration Service will not let on as to how many illegals on fake passports come in to this country on an almost daily basis because they do not know.
What does it matter about getting to the continent faster, get there even quicker go and live there if that is all you are concerned about.
The security of our country comes first and foremost as we already have an over crowded place to live without a further entrance for people.

Brilliant idea. Would be an alternative to going in that dreadful tunnel or on a boat where I often get seasick. Lots of big bridges around the world from what I read in places like Japan and China. If they can do it we can to. Plus lots of jobs.
