Would you travel alone with grandchildren?

Occasionally grandparents have the opportunity to take their grandchildren on holiday, both to relieve parents and to offer new experiences and show them new places.

Travelling with family offers a wonderful chance to make memories, but can also be a lot of work. If you’re travelling abroad, you’ll need proper documentation and you will be tasked with the responsibility of creating routine, particularly if children have never spent time away from their parents.

Some grandparents relish the opportunity to offer new perspectives to their grandchildren, others would find it a burden.

What do you think? Would you travel alone with your grandchildren? Or would you prefer to holiday with the entire family?

I’d have loved to but with six of them close together it was impossible. Also less children’s offers and budget airlines then but I hope to take my eldest great granddaughter on holiday soon

Taking a grandchild/grandchildren on holiday by myself was a wonderful experience. I took two of my granddaughter's to Majorca by myself. The oldest was about 6 and the youngest just turned 3. We had a great time. I was in my 60's. We swam, played crazy golf went for walks ate in the hotel and out for dinner in the evenings. We had siestas late afternoon, neither had flown before and I treated them as I had my own children whenever we went abroad. Hats sun cream and a watchful eye. A great bonding experience.

Yes of course so long as they are all well behaved which they are so long as we are in charge. We love taking our grandson out on walks.

First time was when our eldest grandson was 3, now 17, we all loved it. Our youngest grandchild is now 10 and absolutely loves spending time away with us and I have to say spends lots of time staying at home with us

I have taken my two grandchildren away twice now and they are 3 and 6.

We loved it and their mum says they still keep talking about it.

Not sure about this question, it's rather like saying are you too old to take your grandchildren away. We don't sit in our rocking chairs with just memories these days! I've taken 4 grandchildren on UK holidays, and individually to various European places. Some want to stop in their teens but when they grow up we're off again!

I take my autistic granddaughter away every year to our little house in Cyprus, but now she’s older the cost of the flights during the school holidays is crippling me!

We regularly take our granddaughters away for a 1/2 night stay, especially over the summer holidays. We love the chance to take them to different places to broaden their knowledge, and ours!
As our grandsons grow up we are looking forward to doing the same with them.

We took our Grandson away with us from being 4yrs old until a teenager..........! People often commented on how good he was and how lovely that we all ‘holidayed’ together.......!
He was brilliant with other children and often kept them entertained ......he was like the Pied Piper with children trailing after him ....!

We often took our four grandchildren on holiday without their parents and loved it except for the one time I, at the age of 70 years tried to show my grandson how to do a somersault on a trampoline ...and broke my back by crushing a disc!

If I take on the responsibility of looking after my Grandchildren alone why on earth would I not travel with them?

Ive just been on holiday with my grandaughters aged 12 and 14. We did the same last year. We have a lovely time together. As they get older its harder to get that our time as they grow out of farm visits etc.so a short holiday gives you that our time back.

I have travelled alone with my older grand daughter who is 13 but I would be a bit reluctant to travel with the younger ones who are 5 & 2 . That would be a big responsibility I think

While we are still able, and while they still want to, we love to spend time with the grandchildren. If they pick up some life skills that is fine, but the main thing is to connect and enjoy each others company. Because, as with the children. we have set limits and boundaries, there are few problems; in fact, they sometimes behave more conservatively than at home.
Like the children, time with them is short and precious and for us is not to be missed.

I would love it, having their parents around puts constraints on what you are allowed to say or do. It would be a lovely opportunity to bond and have fun with them.

For an odd time it would be a pleasure to travel with grandchidren but for me theywould have to be well behaved as my own child and I would expect no less from others. The two different generations can excellant company for each other and both learn from the experience. I don’t understand the attitude of different generations not mixing with everybody and keeping this country more friendly.
