Do you have trouble sleeping?

Getting a good night’s sleep has never been more fashionable.

In the last 12 months dozens of books dedicated to helping us sleep better have been published and along with it a number of stats that highlight just how important rest is.

According to neuroscientist Matthew Walker, sleep helps us live longer, lowers food cravings, protects us from cancers and other diseases and helps prevent cold and flu and ward off depression and anxiety.

Much of the information comes as no surprise; we all know how much more difficult things feel when we’re tired, and how a good sleep can make all the difference.

And while there’s plenty of useful, common-sense advice out there to help us sleep better, it’s not always as simple as it seems.

Many people have difficulty sleeping; stressful life events, transitions like menopause, shift work and raising a young family are just a few common reasons why sleep might prove elusive at different times in your life.

I don’t have a problem with not sleeping. It’s not a big issue. If I can’t sleep I just get up and do something useful. Even if I only have a couple of hours sleep I know my body clock will right itself eventually. My late partner told me once to count (not sheep) just count and if your thoughts interfere with the count then just start at the beginning again. It worked every time.

I've always had a problem with falling asleep since I was a child! I remember laying in bed listening to the older kids still playing outside on Summer evenings at around 9:30pm and still being awake when my Mother was going to bed around 11pm (she would stick her head round the door of my bedroom to see if I was sleeping and frequently I wasn't!) I always managed to get up okay for school though. As an adult I have a very broken sleep. If I go to bed around 1pm I toss and turn for about an hour before dropping off to sleep and then wake up two or three hours later to go to bathroom, then often toss and turn again for ages before falling back to sleep. When I do try to go to bed early..say around 10 or 11pm I go to sleep straight away but wake up around 1 am and can not get back to sleep for ages. It can be very frustrating.

I cannot remember the last time I had a really good nights sleep. Which is not helped by the warnings we are given about the problems that can occur because of lack of sleep.
I did have a CPAP machine for a while but could not get on with it. I dread the thought of taking sleeping tablets.
I have fallen asleep while out for a meal and was still chewing ,I have also fallen asleep standing up when I have got so tired . I have tried everything alas nothing has helped .
I grab a power nap when possible but it is for a very short time.

I have not had a good sleep due to bereavement and being diagnosed with ptsd tried everything to no avail which leaves me very tired during the day I’m becoming very reclusive any advice would be grateful

It's comforting to know I'm not alone in having to cope with broken sleep. I've also tried decaff coffee with warm milk before bed, reading my book in bed for half an hour or so, closing my eyes and counting "1 2 3"" several times, or just simply 'not trying' to sleep. Some things work for me (sometimes), some don't. If I discover a foolproof way, I'll let you know!!

Sometimes I sleep reasonably well, other times it’s a train crash.
Recently I have started using “This Works” a pillow spray, a bit pricey but it lasts for ages. It has certainly helped. I read when I am wakeful or listen to a story using the “Calm” app.
On a good night I get 7 hours, but about once a month I have a train wreck night. Three hours if I’m lucky, usually when I have something on my mind.
I was referred to the sleep clinic and diagnosed with mild sleep apnoea. Specialist recommended melatonin tablets which I also take each evening.

I have Sleep Apnoea and use a CPAP machine my sleeping is much much better now. Sleep Apnoea is more than just about heavy snoring it is about actually stopping breathing many times whilst asleep. Left untreated it is very dangerous you must get it sorted especially if you drive. You can fall asleep at the wheel of a car without realizing this , imagine the consequences.

Reading some peoples comments about lack of sleep, One thing to avoid is too much caffiene during the day, be that in coffee or fizzy/energy drinks . Avoid chocolate which has caffiene in it . Many large coffees in cafe's have the equivelant of 5 or 6 cups of regular coffee

If I can't sleep I get up and have a small bowl of porridge and a half cup of tea- carbohydrates help us sleep apparently...and I have to say it works every time for me! I sometimes try to read my book or kindle,..but rarely get through a couple of pages before my eyes are closing...

I was told that snoring interrupts sleep. Not only your partner but your own. I now use a CPAP machine to alleviate this. My sleep has now doubled.

I just can't switch off when I go to bed. I was reading this morning at 3 am for an hour, then went back to sleep for a couple more hours. I long for a 7 hour sleep, it would be heaven. Have just bought a new pillow to see if that helps.

My time clock is off- course - my body tells me that 4AM is bedtime!! Has anybody else had this problem as I am desperate to go to bed at a normal time

fractured sleep pattern. fall asleep well after reading but wake during the night. Have found a pulsating blue light which regulates breathing sometimes helps. It mimics the winding down breathing pattern. Worth a try, bought it for my grandson but he is too young

I have no problem falling asleep but wake up at about 1.00am every night. Sometimes I can fall back to sleep with no problems, other times I can toss and turn for an hour or more before dropping off. I usually wake at around 5.00 am and that's it, even though the alarm is set for 6.30. Like many people have said, it makes no difference what time I go to bed.

I usually get off to sleep ok but tend to waken the same time makes no difference what time I go to bed I seem to have a natural alarm clock inside me that wakens me at the same time

No problem since I got a CPAP (constant pressure air pump) from the hospital. I was diagnosed with sleep apnoea and was constantly tired, the test results were astounding, I was being jolted awake up to 50 times an HOUR as I had stopped breathing. Talk about miracle cure! After an hour or so of experimenting and getting accustomed to it, I slept for 12 straight hours and felt 20 years younger. Getting up to pee is a pain but sleep is no real problem.
All the things that otherwise kept me awake: children, money work stopped when I retired.

I've never had any trouble sleeping, unless I have been out for a meal and had a couple of pints of Guinness, and then I usually have to get up to go to the loo at some point in the night. When I was working - I was lucky to do so until I was 74 - I managed a solid seven and a half to eight hrs but since I retired I probably get a solid six and a half to seven hrs. Go to bed at elevenish, do a puzzle and have a read for half an hr, and then within a couple of minutes I've gone. Around six thirty/six forty five, get up, make a cup of tea and along with couple of biscuits go back to bed for another puzzle and a read for an hr. Out of bed around seven forty five/eightish, breakfast, bathroom, and i'm ready for whatever I have planned for the day. I thank whoever !!! that I appear to be one of the lucky ones. But after two and a half years of enjoying retirement I now feel as if I want to get involved with some form of unpaid, part time, charitable work.

I have difficulty getting to sleep so I read until I feel able to sleep. I can usually sleep for two to three hours max so I get up as all I am doing is tossing and turning make a cup of tea and read some more and perhaps an hour later I return to bed to sleep some more hopefully till morning but frequently I wake again a short while later.

I have no trouble getting off to sleep, but wake after n hour or so to go to the loo. Easily back to sleep for another hour or three then I am fully awake. Usually I sleep for a total of 4 to 5 hours a night.

I can get off to sleep quite easily, but wake up so very early ie 4am then find I cannot get back off to sleep. It makes no difference what time I go to bed!

I usually slep well and going a few times to the loo will not disturb me going back off to sleep. However I do have sleep deprived nights in particular when I have worries or stressful situations.

I try as much as possible to embrace my fears / concerns / anxieties instaed of trying to counter them or fathom them. The brain (deep brain not daily brain) will interogate my worries and usually come up with a solution in the morning. Our brains (daily and deep) never go to sleep but they do have download time and upload time. It is the same mechanism I use to eradicate pain from the people I help.

Embrace our concerns or the mourning of what we perceive and feel our depravations are. They are real but they are not without solutions.

Sleep well and live well doing and experiencing everything you want and need to that only you know about. Be happy as we are dead forever is my motto. Hugs n smiles from me to you.

I haven't slept well for years. I often go three days with just the odd half hour sleep. When I was still working I could be awake all night and then go in to work. I have tried everything. I've researched lots of ideas about how to get better sleep but nothing works. I was referred to a sleep clinic but they weren't interested once they knew I didn't have sleep apnoea.

havent slept well .... for as long as I can think probably “years”.
Yes do all the right things ...l keep busy , walk ,....
Or do very little all day ... makes no difference .
I have blackout curtains .... no mobiles in bedroom ,etc etc .... haven’t had any constructive medical help, although given sleeping tablets , which I manage , occasionally cutting in half , then back on full dose again . ( over counter tablets are no help .)
I do feel on holiday in the sun , I do tend to sleep a little better ... something to do with the light getting into the back of your eyes .
Some nights I get 5 hours , 3hours 5 hours , sometimes awake all night .
So if your are are good sleeper YOU DONT KNOW how lucky you are .
Just a tip if you have a partner who is restless and keeping you awake , IF POSSIBLE move into another room , so you are not disturbed .

I have always slept well and always take hot milk to bed. I do know of some who use self-hypnosis to help them get to sleep.
Regular meditation is a must to calm the over-active mind, the over busy mind is one of the biggest culprits for sleeplessness I feel.

I don’t always have trouble sleeping but I have to get up at least three times to go to the loo and of course each time you become more and more awake. I am also a very light sleeper so if I get to sleep anything wakes me up from somebody walking past the house to a creak of a floorboard in the house.
I also have nightmares of the type if you try to go back to sleep you go straight back into the nightmare and whether I remember what it is about or not I’m too upset to fall asleep again. Some nights there is nothing that I can do to get to sleep but I can’t go downstairs to do something else as I have two dogs who I can’t disturb. I used to eventually dose off whilst reading but that doesn’t work now it just helps to pass the time.

The trouble with people nowadays is the fact that they keep on thinking about whatever problems they have had during day time while they are sleeping. This happens subconsciously without them really knowing it.
What I do, and believe me I have had and still have deep soul problems, family wise and friends whom I thought were really good friends.
One half hour in the night before I turn the lights off before I go to sleep I "empty" my head of these thoughts very thoroughly and then I switch the lights off.
I go to bed at 21.00 hours and sleep till 06.00 hours, completely refreshed and relaxed.

Recently widowed so sleeping is just another challenge to my new life without my husband. I try to take a lovely bubble bath before bedtime this helped initially. But back to just 3 hours a night again now. Xx

It was when my husband died that I discovered the joy of R4 during the night (switches to BBC World Radio after midnight) . Talk radio can be so soothing and at least helped me to get through the night. Now I have periods of sleeping very well or very barley. Have found my answer: when I sleep well that's great. When I am sleepless I either turn on the radio or read a book until I can sleep sometimes getting up and making a hot drink and a couple of biscuits! My Nan used to make me have a drink and biscuit before bed 'So you don't have night starvation!). Think the trick is not to fret about it. At least if I get digestive biscuit crumbs in the bed there's nobody to complain.

I too found the World Service again! Then I am torn about continuing listening or going back to bed! A bowl of porridge or cereal also helps with sleep...works every time for me...hungry or not!
