Who would you like to see succeed the Queen – Prince Charles or Prince William?

In a recent newspaper poll apparently, the public wants Prince William to be King when Queen’s reign ends.

Pollsters Deltapoll interviewed 1,590 adults and found a generational divide over who should take the throne – with younger people even calling for Prince Harry to become king.

The Duke of Cambridge has a 20-point lead – 47% to 27% – over his father Prince Charles in a huge blow to the heir’s popularity despite great strides to improve his public image over the past two decades.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a very positive public image.

The data, weighted to be representative of the British adult population as a whole, will come as a shock to the royal family, who launched a PR drive after Charles’s divorce in 1996 from Princess Diana and their handling of her tragic death in 1997.

Just over 40% believe the monarch, who turns 95 on April 21, should remain in her position until she dies.

A fifth believe she should abdicate if in good health compared to 27% declaring Britain’s longest-serving monarch should choose to abdicate if her health fails.

Graham Smith, CEO of anti-monarchy group Republic, said: “No matter what the polls say Charles will be king.”

“This poll sets up the monarchy for a major crisis in support at the start of the decade that will probably see the succession of King Charles.”

“As we approach the end of the Queen’s reign this medieval system is going to collide with modern British values. And the only credible solution is for the people to choose our head of state.”

“It’s time Britain had a serious grown-up debate about who replaces the Queen. If voters want a choice that can only happen in a republic.”

What are your views? Who do you think should become king? Would you like to see Prince Charles take his rightful place on the throne or should he be bypassed and allow Prince William to take the reigns?

Who would you like to see succeed the Queen - Prince Charles or Prince William?

Prince Charles is the rightful heir, so there should be no question of his being next on the throne.

I personally think Charles would make a good King as I do William .They both carry out their duties and are hard working Royals. Give William a chance of a life before he becomes King .. Charles should take over from the Queen

Apparently, Charles can't say "No" to the throne and the Queen can't choose anybody else. However, I believe that morally, Charles should abdicate as soon as he ascends the throne and pass the reins of the reign over to William. After the way Diana was treated by Charles and Camilla I don't believe the British public would accept Queen Camilla.

Apart from the right to succession etc., etc., to push W into this position at such a young age would not be a good idea. Once again experience and age count for so much with this position.
C has a grasp on some of these world leaders who come to the UK on a "visit " who are very crafty and just wait for an opportunity to further themselves at some one else's expense.

The Queen was only 25 when she ascended the throne! William has been brought up from birth to become King one day, so he knows what to expect, whereas the Queen had no idea when she was a child, that she would one day become our Monarch. However, I think most British and Commonwealth citizens would agree that she has done a wonderful job throughout her long reign.

The big difference is that Elizabeth knew that she was the heir to the throne and had to learn fast from her mother and father who suffered from ill health and a quick succession would be required.

William is not "in waiting", Charles will take the throne and has had many more years experience and advice in dealing with the chicanery of some of the politicians and heads of state and their perfidious ways.

It's about time these anti-monarchists shut up. Having the monarch as a benign constitutional head of state precludes having the idiots who manage to get themselves elected. As in USA 2016 to 2020. The monarchy is a stabilising force on our country.

It is not the public's choice. Prince Charles is next in line to the throne and he will take his position as king. That's the way is has always been and should go on. Just because some joe in the street doesn't like someone (someone he doesn't even know but is led by the nose by the gutter press) doesn't mean he can change tradition.

It is not who we would like, it is Prince Charles’s birth right. He is the heir. If he wishes to abdicate then Prince William would be next in line. I don’t expect he is in to much of a hurry to be on the throne.

Sorry, this is a "non-question". Our culture and system of government is for a Constitutional Monarch who has the right of succession by birth. Otherwise we may as well have a sort of Republic with a popularity contest for a title such as president. A sort of Love Island for leaders.
Brrr. Just had a shudder. With false news, influencers, "me toos", virtue signallers, wokesters and any amount of "spokespeople?", for self interest groups of all persuations who can come up with a snappy acronym.

I believe Charles should definitely become our King, when the time comes..He's been groomed for it all his Life, whereas William is relatively speaking, still at the begining. I admire Charles ethics and views on the environment. I believe William has started to share his Fathers views, and will eventually make a good King too.

Prince William has a young family to raise. He should be allowed to have as much time as possible with his growing children before being burdened by the top position. What else does Charles have to do and he has been kept waiting long enough to acceed. HM queen deserves a little rest and time to mourn. Let charles take over soon. I disagree Camilla is unpopular. It always seems to raise such controversy in the UK,---- do away with the monarchy , problems with succession, benign dictatorship etc., etc.
No disrespect to the UK , but take a leaf out of the sovereign scandinavian countries books. Denmark, Sweden, Norway etc., etc. It is possible to have both, and have your cake and eat it.

It has to be Prince Charles he has lived his whole life in preparation to be the King. He will bring his own views and life skills to the job. I am sure there is a lot more to Prince Charles that we do not know. We have found out so much more of the life of Prince Philip in his death then we the public knew of him before his death.
I think Prince William needs to spend the coming years bringing up his young family and get more life experiences so that in time he will be a better King for it. They each have a job o do now . That is to deal with the loss of a parent and grandfather. They have big shoes to fill and follow from the example of our HRH Queen Elizebeth II

While you have to feel sorry for Charles who has been waiting for so long for his moment I think it is time to modernise for the sake of the country. Charles is an old fogey and will be unable to connect with a good proportion of the nation.

William has a better chance of making the royals more relevant and has to lead a seriously slimmed down royal family.

Yes, perhaps you are right but he will connect with the other old fogeys of the nation and there are still a good few of them about! It’s Charles for me as he is next in line and it should be him unless he makes the decision to step aside for William. It’s not a popularity contest but his right by birth. Plus you never know, he might surprise us all and be the one to drive through some much needed changes to the monarchy, if given the chance.

Nobody because I think it's time to start phasing out royalty in this country. For so many reasons. We are in the 21st century and still bowing and curtseying? No. The royal family has grown exponentially and it's time we now drew a line. Buckingham Palace and other residences could be used to house the homeless and we could all start caring more about others who are in need.

We humans need to start caring more. Not revering those who were born into lives of luxury (not always happy lives but luxurious ones nonetheless). Other countries throughout the world have proved that you don't need royalty to rule a country. Time to let it go now, peacefully and with dignity.

In principle I agree with you Wilf. Charles is rather in the mould of his grandmother - a Victorian or Hapsburg emperor. I cannot see him coping with the rigours of a twenty first century monarchy.

However, in the absence of words to the contrary, he is next in line.

Charles may have already signed a document of abdication, or may do so soon. He is too old for the nation to get value for money from him, too set in his ways to modernise anything (I am too!) and frankly the possibility of a ten or fifteen year effective reign before a regent is required doesn't thrill me.

I would prefer to see William take the throne, but it's not public opinion that matters, it's precedent.

I don't know how old you are but I cannot agree with your ageist remarks. Charles is two years younger than me and I am not set in my ways, so please do not claim to be speaking for my age group. Each generation is entitled to see its 'royal contemporary' succeed to the throne and I'm not going to be robbed of that. The Act of Succession governs this and I, for one, am very much looking forward to Charles's succession to the throne. He is very insightful and intelligent and has been preparing for this all his life. On the occasions when he speaks publicly he is always interesting and it is fascinating to see how his awareness is evolving from monarch-in-waiting to monarch-regnant. Too many people, including the media, make superficial judgments based on flimsy whims instead of serious insight. I'm sure William will be excellent in his turn but his time is not yet. He is still learning 'the ropes' and has three small children to bring up. It's time that all this silly speculation about the royal succession came to a swift end!

I thank you for your kind words Scriptitation. The manner of your speech alludes to an uncommon grace.

The original Speakers Corner in Hyde Park London, I would remind you, on which principles this part of Silver Surfers is modelled, allowed people of diverse backgrounds and opinions to voice their thoughts. I spoke there on several occasions in the sixties, then rather sadly being a London resident.

That you should disagree with my long held views here given voice is no surprise. Indeed, it is expected there would be disagreements.. That you should demean me in such a fashion is a surprise, since most Silver Surfers are intelligent, experienced and really quite pleasant.

You do not know how my views of Charles were formed; what were the occasions of such opinions. Therefore you speak in ignorance!

Please let me assure you, I do not need a lesson in British Constitution; make no mistake, I'm not your fool.

My opinion of Charles remains, even strengthened by your post here. So I thank you for your boldness, and your contempt, and look forward to a real crossing of swords.

"Most Silver Surfers are intelligent, experienced and really quite pleasant", your words. My original impression of Silver Surfers was of a group of people with modern ideas who would scorn ageism. I have not found this to be the case. To casually dismiss anybody as "too old", as you and one or two others have done, is unacceptable. You have not been demeaned, neither have you received a lesson from me in British Constitution. Your sensitive reaction indicates you have not been crossed enough!

Why do you say that when it was Charles who advocated modern organic farming methods, modern ideas on town planning and the environment and the Prince of Wales Award Scheme for young people? It is also Charles who advocates the slimming down of the Royal Family, hence the minimal number of photos on the Queen's desk when she gave her Christmas Message to the nation. My only contention since Christmas 2003 is that Charles will not take the throne but step aside. I believe an ultimatum was handed him by the Queen and Prince Philip ... Camilla or the throne. When he stormed out and flew back to Highgrove he had signed away the throne.

Oldlady72, I see no problem with someone who has learnt the ropes of the trade from their mother through out their life. I believe Charles is well aware of what the modern world holds, as do many of us. I also think he will want to allow William the time to enjoy his children full time, something his own mother never had the chance to experience full time.
