Would you like to try hot cross bun flavoured cheese?

Is this the cheesy midnight snack you never knew you needed?

Waitrose has seriously raised the game with its latest Easter-themed launch.

If you love hot cross buns, and you’re a fan of cheese you’ll be able to buy hot cross bun-flavoured cheese.

Yes, that’s right, hot cross bun-flavoured cheese.

Waitrose cheese

Dubbed the ‘Hot Cross Bun Yorkshire Wensleydale Truckle’, the sweet cheese is described as being “a combination of subtle seasonal spices, zesty candied orange peel and plump sultanas blended with creamy Yorkshire Wensleydale”.

If you’re a fan of sweet and savoury, it could to be a game-changing addition to your cheese board.

“The sweet ingredients [in hot cross buns] work really well with a rich, creamy cheese like Wensleydale,” says Waitrose cheese buyer, Alice Shrubsall. “So we’ve combined the taste of one of our shoppers’ favourite Easter treats with the cheese. The result is a surprisingly delicate spiced cheese, a perfect grown-up alternative to chocolate.”

The bold move comes as Waitrose reports seasonal cheese is proving popular with its customers. The supermarket says sales are up over 200% on last year, as they look for more unusual and interesting flavour combinations.

The cheese costs a wallet-saving £3 for a 200g serving, so you won’t break the bank on your next weekly shop. But if you’re already grabbing your car keys and heading out the door, you might want to hold fire – the cheese hybrid won’t be launching in store nationwide until Thursday, April 4.

What do you think?  Would you give it a go? Does it make your mouth water or your stomach churn?

There is already the Bowland cheese which is a fruit and spice flavour, is this going to be much different? I am all for it!
In Yorkshire we eat Wensleydale cheese with fruit cake and fruit tea cakes so why not have the fruit and spice in the cheese.

I love a tasty strong cheese and I love hot cross buns so this sounds lovely. I would definitely try it. Just hope other Supermarkets sell it as I don`t shop at Waitrose.

I like cheese and I like hot cross buns but am getting a wee bit tired of searching through lots of mixed tastes when I am just looking for the original item. If I want to taste both I can place a decent English cheese on a basic hot cross bun. Not in favour.

Yes. If it's cheese I would give it a go. My Father enjoyed a slice of cheese with fruit cake and I do also. Cheese with apple pie anyone? Yum.

I think hot cross buns taste like soap, so who wants soapy cheeses

Sounds disgusting. I am a bit of a traditionalist with cheese. love to try new types, especially artisan cheeses but not adulterated cheese. Strangely, when working on a farm as a youth, I tried and liked a tea cake with a slice of cheese in, the same with cheese and apple slices and also cheese with a slice of fruit cake.
No accounting for taste is there?

Seems like sales of Wensleydale are dropping off Billy. They've tried so many variations this last couple of years but even my Collies won't eat them.

I was never greatly fond of it preferring Cheddar or Stilton but if they can find a market for hot cross bun flavoured Wensleydale, or even Christmas pudding let them try.

I'd like to see my local Co-op's manager when I ask for hot cross bun flavoured cheese next Christmas! I'll report back nearer the time.

I am always ready to try a new recipe as I like to cook a lot myself. Hot cross bun flavoured cheese is new one to me against recipes as "sardines and strawberry" and " salad of lettuce and banana" to name a few. This one sounds more like someone took a serious thought of how to cross what with what. Might become a serious contender.

Definitely not! Why don’t they try to produce completely new recipes instead of consistently just adding together oddball all produce which is actually just mixing sweet with savoury. Please leave our good annual treats alone.

Yes I am willing to try anything. If it doesn't taste so good I can always feed it to my hounds who will eat anything!
