Did someone say North Africa?

Looking for colourful cultures, natural beauty and adventure?

Then North Africa is the destination for you. It’s home to some of the world’s most famous and iconic attractions, such as the pyramids of Giza, the souk in Fes and the Medina of Marrakesh. Not to mention vibrant coastal towns like Tunis and Alexandria.

This fascinating region has so much to offer the traveller seeking out something truly different.

Here are some destinations to put at the top of your North Africa travel list – travelling from west to east.

Morocco

Marrakesh

Lose yourself in any of its bustling cities. Tangier, for example, is home to the Kasbah (castle), the Medina and a seafood market that’s a must-visit.

If you’re a beach lover then Agadir on the Atlantic coast has a laid-back vibe and a wide choice of restaurants and cafés. Also known for the El Had souk with its narrow streets, market stalls and 6,000 shops.

You simply can’t visit Morocco without viewing at least one of its many Kasbahs. The most famous is the Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou. Protected by UNESCO, it’s the location of many movies and TV series such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones to mention just a few. Make it a location of your trip by booking the Zagora Desert: 2-day Trip from Marrakesh.

Algeria

It’s easy – and a joy – to get lost in the vibrant capital city of Algiers, with its wealth of historical and contemporary attractions. That includes the Kasbah of Algiers – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that shouldn’t be missed for its intricate architecture and labyrinth of vibrant markets full of local goods.

Visit the Grande Mosque El Kabir. Also known as The Great Mosque of Algiers, this remarkable architectural piece, dating back to 1097, is located in the historic Kasbah area of the city, close to the harbour. Be sure to visit the impressive Palace of Justice. The National Museum of Antiquities and Islamic Art is a must-see.

After a busy day of shopping, sightseeing and exploration, enjoy a unique experience at a hammam. These baths are a great way to detox your body and mind. Enjoy Arabic culture while indulging in some relaxation.

Tunisia

With its balmy sand-fringed Mediterranean coast, sprawling sand dunes, elegant spas and Star Wars desert locations, Tunisia boasts everything from magical mountain oases and atmospheric holy cities to some of the most sought-after beach resorts. It caters for both the beach lover and the culture vulture.

Take Sidi Bou Said, a clifftop village with striking blue-and-white buildings, cobbled streets, a long sandy beach, stunning views and a bohemian vibe, just a stone’s throw from the nearby Roman ruins at Carthage. Check out the Dar Said Hotel for the perfect base to explore this fantastic place from.

Other treasures include the El Jem Amphitheatre, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed colosseum – the second-largest in the Roman world (after Rome’s) and its museum, plus Kairouan, the 4th holiest city in the Islamic world. Both are available on the Full-Day Kairouan and El Jem Tour. Fall in love with Tunisia.

Egypt

Cairo, Egypt

The oldest tourist destination on Earth. Ancient Greeks and Romans were the first travellers, coming to see the mythical Pyramids, the Colossi of Memnon and towering Pharaonic temples. Today, the mighty Nile and marvellous monuments like the Sphynx entice many to Egypt, while the beguiling desert and lush Nile delta attract adventurers.

Other visitors like to tap into the history of Cairo’s early churches and remote desert monasteries. Visit the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, where Tutankhamun’s tomb was unearthed, and see the glittering finds in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

And if you’re after a deserted beach, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Egypt is also one of the best diving destinations in the world with the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba being favourite destinations. Dive into Egypt.
