Festive trips for a winter getaway

The Christmas season is fast approaching and believe it or not the countdown of 100 days until Christmas has already begun!  You might not be feeling particularly festive just yet, but nothing gets us into the Christmas mood like planning a getaway to one of the world’s best winter holiday destinations.

Maybe you’re looking to book a getaway to explore some of Britain’s beautiful cities, that come alive in the run up to Christmas with bustling markets, fabulous shopping, and outdoor choirs singing carols.

Or maybe you’re thinking of a getaway with the grandchildren to explore picturesque snowy scenes in winter wonderlands or enjoy cos family evenings by the fire at historic hotels. The festive season really is a wonderful time of year for relaxing, exploring new destinations, and spending quality holiday time with friends and family.

You’ll be pleased to know we’ve got a few festive trips lined up for you already this year. You might choose to soak up the yuletide cheer in with a railway trip to Bath, where the city’s fantastic Christmas Market awaits. Or, if you’re looking to go further afield, how about exploring the snow-dusted forests and stunning landscapes of Swedish Lapland?

Nothing gets the festive season off to a start like a trip to a traditional Christmas market. With alpine chalets decked with twinkling lights, gaggles carollers singing upbeat songs, and scents of cinnamon and cloves carried by a crisp breeze, Christmas markets create an idyllic festive atmosphere that’ll surely get you in a merry mood.

At Bath’s impressive market you can shop for Christmas presents, enjoy delicious bratwurst and gingerbread and even go for a skate at the ice rink. It makes for a beautiful family day out.

This November, you can join us on a day’s train ride aboard the elegant British Pullman to visit Bath’s markets. You’ll be wowed by this restored 1920s train where you can sit back in a decadent art deco carriage at a table set with crisp white linens and enjoy brunch served at your seat as you head towards Bath.

If you’re looking for a longer winter getaway, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more magically festive location than Swedish Lapland. This is the home of Father Christmas himself, after all!

Here you’ll find peaceful wilderness with lush pine and spruce forests covered in deep snow. As soon as you arrive, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a snowy scene from the front of a Christmas card.

There are so many family-friendly activities to enjoy here if you’re looking for an unforgettable Christmas break for the grandchildren. Travel through the pines on a husky-pulled sledge, meet friendly local reindeer, and enjoy a warm drink in a lavvu, a traditional Swedish teepee.

You might even choose to take the grandkids on a very special snowmobile sledge ride to visit Father Christmas in his grotto. Spend plenty of time outdoors and you might be lucky enough to spot the dazzling Northern Lights dancing across the skies.

You can try these activities and more on our magical four-day trip to Lapland in December. You’ll be staying at a hotel with its very own Christmas grotto, where kids can make Christmas decorations while you relax in the cosy lounge bar.
