Lockdown Fitness

Wanting to shed some pounds put on over lockdown? Here is a tried and tested introduction to just some of the many exercise videos to be found on YouTube for the more mature and those out of practice! The pace hots up as the weeks count down but you can do it!

Make sure you always warm-up and relax down, keep some water handy and pace yourself – let’s go!

Health Benefits

Even a little exercise every day is better than none. Physical activity can help you stay healthy, energetic and independent. It also sets you up for the day, injects a happy, upbeat, positive feeling and also evokes that – ‘I can do” attitude. In turn it also helps you be more flexible when walking, gardening, playing with the grandchildren and even getting up from a chair without groaning too loudly! Being more active lowers the risk of a heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers plus depression and dementia

A quick round-up

Tapping in ‘Easy Exercises for Seniors’ (as wanting to start slowly as a 64 something) I dug out my aged stretch gear and closed the door to the husband and dogs.

‘Go4 life’ offered an encouraging gentle start. I opted for the ‘15- Minute Sample Workout for Older Adults’ and was introduced to a cheery lady called Sandy with a wide smile and her 4 jolly teammates. It’s an easy yet effective routine that can be performed sitting or standing.

Memorable Sayings during the session “Always listen to your body”

Staying with the Seniors theme, I was then tempted by the heading ‘15 minutes exercise for Seniors’ from snappily titled Has Fit (Heart and Soul Fitness). The very friendly and encouraging Kozák and Claudia work our obliques and abdominals.

Memorable Saying “Any workout we can do without crawling on the ground is good with us!”

I then discovered Joe. He looked nice and friendly in his front room and invited me to join in with his ’10-minute Home Workout for Seniors’ offering 5 exercises spending 40 seconds on each with rests in-between. Nice and achievable!

Little did I know that this is THE Joe Wicks who appears live in countless homes globally every morning inspiring and loved by a staggering number of kids and adults alike with his fun routines.

Memorable Saying “Only 10 seconds to go”, “Keep going”, “Come on”, “well done for getting through it”

Other Senior offerings include the More life Health series with Australian Mike with his wide selection of bright tops and workouts lasting a do – able 5 to 10 minutes.

By now, I’d decided to up the game saying my goodbyes to Sandy and friends to go in search of more vigorous activities. I ‘found’ a lovely fresh-faced lady called Lucy and my goodness is she one busy lass! Classes galore, recipe books, motivational podcasts but still all short and manageable

Her 7-day Challenge to Lose Belly Fat (say it as it is) appeals to everyone keen to do just that. Lucy has many workouts to try so enjoy exploring!

Memorable Saying “it’s best to exercise in the morning to reset your metabolism which helps burn more calories during the day”, “I promise you will love the results”

Exercising as we get older

On the subject of the tape measure moment, it’s worth knowing that as we get older, we tend to gain fat and lose muscle due to physiological changes that make fertile ground for belly fat and chicken wings.

Have a look at the excellent NHS section:

For those aches and pains, there are a plethora of clips to follow: For an aching neck, try:

And for chronic back pain, visit the NHS – where some simple moves presented by lovely Sam from instructorlive.com are very effective.

Just when I thought it was safe to put away the kit for the day, up popped ‘Fun Low Impact Workout for Total Beginners’ from Body Project. I really liked Daniel and his comfortably shaped ladies.

Memorable Sayings during the session “Enjoy it and get to the end”

Let me finish with Leslie, the lady with the laugh and her many walking sessions. This is definitely one of my favourites! I even walked 2 miles!

Result:  After 8 or so weeks, I do feel fitter, more positive and slimmer and now wake up planning which session to choose! Remember, vary the exercises, enjoy them and keep smiling and if you want a day off, have one!

I have a background in publishing and sponsorship and love working on new projects. I have also been a hotel inspector and had to visit (not really a hardship) many a luxury hotel to check it was up to scratch. My view is that life is for exploring, trying new things, flipping a negative into a positive and making the most of what you can. The simple pleasures are sometimes the best - walking the dogs, trying a new recipe, seeing friends, settling down with a fresh newspaper and helping out!
