Should my moles be looked at?

I have always had a lot of moles, especially on my back, and wondered if I should get them checked out? I am nearly 40 and have never had them looked at. How should I go about this?

Most moles appear by the time we are 30 and we should always be on the lookout for any changes to our moles or see if any new ones appear.  There is a risk that a mole can become cancerous so specialists recommend we watch for moles that:

  • are irregular in shape
  • have an uneven border
  • change colour or are made up of many colours
  • increase in size (in particular more than 6mm in diameter)
  • are raised above the skin
  • bleed or itch or become red

It is all too easy though to panic and mistake an atypical mole for a cancerous one.  If you are worried however, then you should always get checked out by a skin cancer specialist.
