Coronation Chicken …. The Queen of all Sandwiches?
Coronation Chicken Scoops Top Award in Jubilee Year
The UK has patriotically voted Marks & Spencer’s Coronation Chicken sandwich as the best new sandwich of 2012.
In a poll of sandwich lovers by www.lovesarnies.com, the British Sandwich Association’s consumer website, the M&S sarnie just pipped Tesco’s Finest British Ham Hock and Mature Cheddar sandwich to take the title by a whisker.
The winning sandwich was appropriately launched by M&S to coincide with the Diamond Jubilee Year.
Coronation chicken was first created to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. The dish, comprising cold chicken in a creamy curry sauce, was first presented at a Coronation banquet and has been a massive success around the world ever since.
Launched as part of a limited edition, celebratory range, the Coronation Chicken was M&S’s best-selling Jubilee sandwich, selling nearly 400,000 over the course of the summer.
“The UK sandwich industry leads the world in coming up with interesting new fillings and this adaptation of a royal favourite has clearly proved a winner with consumers,” says Jim Winship, Director of the British Sandwich Association.
“This is the second year running that a Marks & Spencer sandwich has won the competition, which says a lot for their innovation skills.”
