Take control of the communications you receive from charities

When giving to charity we know that people are generous in their support. But, even if you have given money or other items to a charity in the past, you might not want to hear from them again.

Sometimes receiving letters, calls, emails, and texts from multiple charities can feel overwhelming, particularly at this time of year.

The Fundraising Preference Service (FPS), a free service, run by the Fundraising Regulator, can help you take control of the communications you receive from charities.

The FPS is the UK’s official service that helps you to manage direct marketing communications from registered charities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that are sent by addressed mail, emails, text messages or phone calls.

How it works

The FPS is a user-friendly online service, and it takes just three easy steps to set up:

  • Search by registered charity number or charity name
  • Select the channels of communication you wish to stop – you can choose addressed mail, emails, text messages or phone calls
  • Enter your contact details and we’ll take care of the rest.

The FPS is safe and secure to use. Every time you use the service, you will be asked to enter your contact details so that charities can find you on their marketing databases and suppress your details. Your personal information will be accessed through the secure FPS charity portal and will only be used by the named charities for the purpose of matching you against their databases.

Getting started

Thousands of people have used the FPS to stop unwanted charity messages.  You can use the FPS for yourself or on behalf of a friend, relative, someone you care for or someone who has died. Watch our short explainer animation so that you can get started.

If it sounds like the FPS will be of help to you or a friend or family member, visit https://www.fundraisingpreference.org.uk/home for more information. You can also call the Fundraising Preference Service helpline on 0300 3033 517.

The FPS helpline is open Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 4:30pm (closed weekends and public holidays). Calls to 03 numbers cost no more than calls to local or national rate numbers (01 or 02) and should be included in inclusive minutes in the same way.
