Resources for family carers

It’s Carers Week in the UK – a nationwide campaign that aims to raise awareness, recognise carers and help provide resources for people in a caring role.

In the UK, 1 in 8 adults are currently providing unpaid care to a friend or loved one – 2 million people each year take on a caring role.

Although it’s incredibly common, most people don’t believe they will take on a role of carer in the future.

In reality, one in five people aged 50 to 64 are carers, and in the last ten years, there has been a 35% increase in carers aged over 65.

Unpaid care is in many ways an invisible support system – the unpaid care provided by the UK’s carers is worth £132 billion a year.

Carers Week is all about recognising carers and raising awareness to help provide better support to people in that role.

Is it possible to get attendance allowance as I look after my husband? He has crippling arthritis in his leafs and can do nothing for himself..aside from yes dressing. I paid to have a bath removed and a walk in shower installed so he can keep himself clean. As he uses sticks to get about the house he can't make food or drink for himself.
I am therefore tied to the house making it expensive to get taxis for shopping I don't drive and buses are often so slow. As well as paying someone to walk the dog as I can no longer leave him except for short periods.

Hi Sazum

I've only just joined the group so just seen your email. The government criteria for AA can be found at:

It's worth having a look at. In addition, quite a few county councils are funding support for informal / family carers, and in a lot of countys there is a 'carers' organisation frequently funded by the county council to support and advise carers. For example I recently worked for Carers in Hertfordshire as the GP Liaison Officer (before moving out to Spain in semi retirement). CinH provide a hotline for queries and support for carers in the Herts area - and I'm sure other countys have something silmilar (if not as fantastic as CinH!!!! 🙂 )

If you need further info, but all means ping me a message - my email is [email protected] - if I can advise you, I will and if I don't know, I might be able to point you to someone who does. BW David
