‘When I’m 64’ – Aches & pains might make life a misery…

New ‘Bare Bones’ research reveals extent of aches and pains amongst the 55+

  • Those aged 64+ more likely to suffer pain constantly
  • 78% of those between 55 and 77 currently had joint pain
  • 40% have been living with pain for 10 years
  • 58% admit it affects mood, 53% mobility and 41% can’t do normal things – seeing family/going out with friends/shopping
  • Former MP and health minister, Edwina Currie, 68, admits she too is beginning to feel like a painful statistic

“Pain makes me moody so I take it out on others”, “even holding hands with my granddaughters can be painful at times” and “my sex life is now non-existent”  are just some of the affects aches and pains have on the lives of 55-74 year olds a new survey found.

Researchers found that 78 per cent of those aged between 55 and 77 years old said they currently had joint or bone pain, while those aged 64 plus were more likely to suffer from it constantly and 40 per cent of those questioned said they have been suffering and living with pain for ten years.

The research, commissioned by BMI Healthcare amongst nearly 400 Gransnet members, also found that 58 per cent admitted it affected their mood, 53 per cent said it affected their mobility and 41 per cent said they are unable to do the things they want, such as going out with friends, shopping, or seeing family.

BMI conducted the study ahead of the launch of its free new ebook ‘The Bare Bones Guide to Joint Pain’ (October 2015), which aims to provide tips and advice on managing joint pain from some of the UK’s leading orthopaedic consultants, along with insight into some of the latest treatment options.

The affect of joint and bone pain on simple everyday activities was also revealed in the research. 68 per cent reporting problems with walking, 54 per cent with housework and 29 per cent on driving, and even common tasks such as cooking, 18 per cent and typing/using an ipad, 15 per cent.

Says former MP and Health Minister, Edwina Currie, who has written an introduction to the guide: “My right knee is swollen and my ankle gets that way too if I don’t give it a lot of TLC. At the not-so-advanced age of 68, I’m beginning to feel like a painful statistic.”

“Too often we can fail to take early action on persistent niggles.  Waiting till pain is excruciating is miserable and unwise. Don’t put up with that pain: get up, get going, get help.”
