How to make a home insurance claim

We often have to make a home insurance claim during a stressful time; such as after a fire or when our homes have been flooded or burgled.

Whatever the circumstances, being organised and knowing what to expect can make your claims process relatively painless.

Stay organised and prepared in advance

Staying organised in general means you’ll have the documents you need to hand when you need them. Many insurers will ask for proof of purchase for items that are stolen or damaged – keeping evidence of your biggest purchases is essential.

Keep important receipts in a safe place, or better yet, scan them and keep a digital copy in on your computer or in your email inbox. Taking a photograph of the item might also be helpful.

Keep your home in a good state of repair

Insurance policies are offered on the condition that you keep your home well maintained and in a good state of repair. Keep a record of annual maintenance to things like your roof and boiler and be sure to have them inspected regularly.

Get in touch with your insurer

The sooner you get in touch with your insurer to make your claim the better – though most offer a period of up to 180 days, if you wait and there is a dispute it could be several months before you’re reimbursed. Insurers prefer to handle large claims as soon as possible, particularly in the event of a flood or fire.

Don’t throw away damaged items

If your home has sustained serious damage due to fire or flood, you probably want to get the clean-up process started straight away. Wait to make your insurance claim first and don’t throw anything away, even if it’s damaged. Often the insurance company will want to send someone to assess the damage when dealing with a large claim.

Photograph the damage

Keep a detailed record of what happened because your insurer will ask for this. Taking plenty of photos or a short video of the damaged areas can also help act as evidence when you’re working through your claim.
