How well do you know the highway code?

Even the most seasoned drivers get confused about what’s fact or fiction when it comes to the highway code.

If you passed your test before 1996, you never had to sit the written theory test that new drivers now write before they can earn their theory test pass certificate and book a practical driving test.

Don’t believe everything you hear; today we’re sharing some commonly held beliefs about the highway code and separating fact from fiction.

Using your phone is legal when the car is stationary

  • Fiction. When you’re stuck in traffic it might be tempting to pull out your phone – even just for a moment – to check your email or read a quick traffic update. The reality is though when the engine is running, it’s illegal to use your phone unless you have a hands-free kit like a Bluetooth speaker.

It’s illegal to eat and drive

  • Fiction. It’s not illegal to eat while driving. But it is illegal to drive when you’re distracted. If you’re not in total control of the car you could be convicted for careless driving. So though it’s not illegal per se, it’s still best to wait and snack at a rest stop or before or after your journey.

You can get a ticket for driving too slowly

  • Fact. You can be driving dangerously at any speed, and in fact driving too slowly can sometimes be more dangerous than driving fast. When you’re on a busy motorway, maintain the flow of traffic; when drivers have to alter their driving to avoid a slower car they can endanger themselves and other road users.

I won’t get a speed ticket for going the limit plus 10%

  • Fiction. This is a widely-held belief that just isn’t true. Driving even 1 mile per hour over the legal speed limit could result in a fine. Remember – it’s a limit, not a target.

It’s not illegal to drive barefoot

  • Fact. Though definitely not advisable, strictly speaking it’s not illegal to drive wearing flip flops or barefoot. In terms of safety though, inadequate footwear or no footwear risks us losing control of the car if our foot slips off the pedal or gets caught.
