Flying with a wheelchair

A physical disability needn’t be a barrier to travel – armed with the right knowledge, you can fly with confidence and relative ease.

Here’s our tips to make flying with a wheelchair as smooth and straightforward as possible.

While you can’t always control the factors that make flying comfortable, being armed with the right information can go a long way.

Inform the airline

At least 48 hours before you fly, be sure to contact the airline and inform them or double check they are aware of your disability. Different airlines and airports have different facilities – this is a good opportunity to check they have the facilities and assistance you need.

Get help at the airport

In Europe if you are a traveller with a disability which affects your mobility when using transport you have the right to help at arrival points like terminal entrances, transport interchanges and car parks. You can get help to reach check in and with registration, as well as assistance moving through the airport, including toilets if you need it. Check the airport you’ll be visiting for the assistance they offer and contact them in advance so the help you need is waiting for you when you get there.

Travel with a companion

Travelling with a companion can make the experience of flying much easier and more relaxed if you have a disability and need additional help. If you’re not self reliant you must travel with a companion as cabin crew are not allowed to lift passengers in and out of seats. Be sure to inform the airline of who you’re travelling with so they can ensure you’re seated together.

Expect your wheelchair to be put in the hold

In most cases you can’t take your own wheelchair into the passenger cabin of a plane – it will need to be stored in the hold of the aircraft instead. Your airline and airport should provide assistance when boarding and a wheelchair to use in the meantime. If you have a battery-powered wheelchair be sure to inform the airline at least 48 hours before you’re set to fly.

Secure travel insurance

Travel insurance is essential for any traveller, and is particularly important for anyone in a wheelchair or with another disability or medical condition. The right insurance policy will provide you with peace of mind and make sure you’re covered if anything should ever go wrong at any stage of your travels.
