Handle your fear of flying

Fear of flying keeps many people from realising their dreams to travel the world.

If you’re a nervous flyer, you’re not alone, and the good news is there are plenty of tips and tricks you can use to help overcome your fears.

Here’s a few things to keep in mind to help you handle your fear of flying and get your next adventure off to a strong start.

Refocus your attention

For many, anxiety over flying begins before ever boarding the plane. If you tend to feel a creeping panic setting in on the way to the airport or while sitting in the lounge waiting to board, try refocusing your attention. Acknowledge your anxiety and accept it, then focus your attention on something else – like reading, having a chat or indulging in some duty free shopping.

Avoid alcohol

Many nervous flyers use a drink to help calm their nerves, and while it might feel good in the short term, it can make you feel even more anxious as the alcohol starts to wear off. If you feel like you need a drink, try opting for a warming cup of tea as an alternative.

Tell someone

The friendly support of those around you can help you feel calmer once you’re mid-air. Tell the gate agent and flight attendants as you board if you’re a fearful flyer. They will be able to reassure you and offer you support throughout the flight. Most flight attendants will go the extra mile to check in with fearful flyers on a flight and can help answer any questions you might have about turbulence.

Try noise cancelling headphones

Noise cancelling headphones are especially popular with frequent flyers for a reason – they help make plane journeys a more pleasant experience by blocking out the noise of the cabin and hum of the engine. If you struggle to relax when you’re mid air, consider investing in a quality pair of noise cancelling headphones. They will filter out distracting noise and can help you forget where you are. Load up some calming music on your smartphone or ipad and spend a few minutes doing breathing exercises with your eyes closed – you might be surprised how easy it is to pretend you’re elsewhere!

Do deep breathing

Breathing exercises are simple but they do work – breathe deeply through the nose for several counts and then exhale slowly from your mouth for the same amount of time. The process triggers your nervous system and physically causes your body to relax.
