Late summer gardening tasks

August is the time to start planning in those late summer and early autumn gardening tasks.

From taking up your lawn mower blades to sowing perennial seeds for next year, here’s a handful of jobs what should be on your list in August and September.

In August

• Water regularly, especially during mid-day and early morning to feed thirsty roots 
• Collect seed from garden plants
• Deadhead flowering plants
• Prune Wisteria
• Pot rooted strawberry runners for next year
• Increase the height of your lawn mower blades and let lawn grass grow longer
• Divide plants once they’re finished blooming to protect from pests and diseases 

In September

• Collect and sow seed from perennials
• Dig up any remaining potatoes or root vegetables
• Reduce watering
• Plant any spring flowering bulbs
• Harvest plums and freeze any excess
• Top up lawn seed
• Clean out the garage or garden shed
