FriendshipHi Eve, I well remember Tomorrow’s World, as I am a bit older than you might assume. ( will be 76 come the 4th of March ) still as your old granny may have also said ( age is just a number ) luckily I am still very active and enjoy my travelling, I am usually in East or South Africa at this time of the year, but have just recovered from a lung infection, so will have to wait until later in the year, or scale down to a trip in Europe instead. The storm has mostly passed through here now, but still a stiff breeze and a bit colder than of late, but should be a bit milder tomorrow. I have a flat in a retirement building, so don’t have to worry about any damage to our roof., I am originally from a town in Berkshire, Reading, and May be moving back down South again come the Spring. Well I hope that you have a good evening, I am about to have a look at what I can have to eat, as getting a bit hungry, so I will finish off for now, hope that you can keep chatting, it keeps us young. Take care, all best wishes, Terry. SViewDate:

Greetings from Texas - [DELETED_MEMBER]Hi again AllCharm, did not think that I would get a reply to my message, so thank you. I am not sure what the time is in Texas, but is 6.20pm here in the North of England, for the time of year, it has been quite mild, but tinged with a bit of rain on and off. Thank you for you comment about age, for the record I am 75 years old, I have had a quiet Christmas Day, I have a flat in a retirement building, and a lot of the residents have been out and about visiting family, I have no wife or children, but have 4 sisters and 3 brothers, but they all live in the South, so did not get the chance to visit this year. Well whatever time it is there, enjoy the rest of your day/ evening, All best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

My name is Terry, and I am 75 years old and live in Wigan in Lancashire. Where are you hoping to move to when you do move? I am not from around here as I was born in Reading in Berkshire. I love to travel, and like nature and wildlife, and if you would like to chat I will be here, in the meantime, take care, best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

TRAVELING SOLO AND LOOKING FOR A COMPANION?Hi TexasBlueBelle, glad to hear that you are fully booked up for what I can say will be a wonderful trip. Just a note of caution, I was in Cape Town last October ( 12th time ) and the atmosphere has changed in as much that mugging are on the increase, I have never in all the years that I have stayed in Cape Town been as vigilant as I was then, 3 young girls who were staying at the same backpackers hostel were robbed just off Kloof Street. It is best to go out in groups, and avoid the Castle of Goodhope, as that is a hotspot for muggers. I am not trying to scare you, and I hope that you enjoy what is a beautiful City. So have a great time, but just be careful, best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

TRAVELING SOLO AND LOOKING FOR A COMPANION?Hi SeetheWorld, sorry if I am butting in on your comments, but as a man who has been travelling through East and Southern Africa for many years, I can recommend a travel company called Absolute Africa, they do trips throughout Africa. These trips are not for everyone as they involve camping and participating in the everyday tasks like cooking for the group, and travelling on a truck with a group of like minded people. You can look them up, just Google www.absoluteafrica.com. Hope this is of some help, Happy travelling, best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Make new friendsHi apinya923, Always pleased to say hello to new members, my name is Terry, I am probably a bit older than you at 75, but as they say age is just a number. I live in Wigan, having moved here from Southampton 10 weeks ago. I love to travel, but I may have to restrict my travels to the UK or Europe, as my travel insurance is on the steep side, I usually like to go of to Africa in the winter months as I am not a cold weather person. Anyway I hope that you have a few more replies to your post, and hope that you may want to chat at any time, so cheerio for now, take care and good luck. Best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Yet another new arrivalHi Mary, thank you for your message, yes I do love to travel in Africa, I do go on overland trips on a truck with up to 25 other people who I have never met before. We have a mixture of male and female travelers of all ages from 20s to 70s and the trips are participating in as much as we do cooking for the whole group, put up our own tents and help to keep the truck clean and tidy, we split into groups of 3 so if there are 28 of us on the truck we do the cooking once every 8 days. The company I like travelling with is Absolute Africa ( you can look them up on Google ) The Countries I have visited in East Africa are, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Tanzania, then down to Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and finally to Namibia and South Africa. We usually stay at a camp site at a place just outside Jinja, and again in Kampala. then on to Kabale and Kisoro to visit the mountain Gorillas in the Virunga mountains. The beaches in the North of Zanzibar are very nice, and the Indian Ocean is nice and warm. The place to go are Kendwa or Nungwe and the beach restaurants are all along the beach with blackboards outside with menus written on them, we used to split into groups of 5 so that we used all of them at one time, so to spread the money equally. Well I think that I have waffled on too much, so I will leave you in peace, happy travels, all best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Holidays with dogHi craftygrannie, good to hear from you after so long, I am sorry to hear that you have had no responses from your post, but someone may get in touch. I am a bit like you, in that respect, as I would not do any driving in the UK or anywhere, but I like the idea of having the freedom to go where you want to go, and stop anywhere that takes your fancy, my sister and her husband are buying a campervan in December and going travelling around the country with their 2 little dogs, after she was told she has a terminal cancer in her lungs and kidneys, so I said go for it as there is plenty of beautiful places around this country without the hassle of going abroad. So fingers crossed for you, keep positive, all best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Yet another new arrivalHi Scruffles, ( funny title ) thank you for your kind reply, sometimes you get one and another time nothing. Yes you could say that the travel I have done with Absolute Africa is a bit bolder than your average trip, but at least we go with about 25 of us on the truck, so safety in numbers. I am the oldest of 8 children, and left home to join the Army when I was 17 years old, and stayed in for 12 years, I think that was when I got the travel bug, but did not do much for a good while after as I got a proper job and tried to settle down, but after I had my heart attack in 2001 I got kick started into travelling again, and have not looked back since, having said that, I will not be doing any more overland trips as my travel insurance is way too much for a long trip, so may have to stick to Europe where there are some beautiful countries to visit, so have not given up hope. You are right about it being easier for a man to do solo travel, but I have stayed in many backpackers hostels where lots of young women have been staying, they are mostly in their 20s or 30s so not at the age of us older folk. Well I did say that I like to chat so you have been warned, still it was nice to get a reply, so I will be here if you want to chat more, until then, have a good evening, and keep well, all best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Yet another new arrivalHi Scruffles, just a quick hallo, hope that you manage to find plenty of people to chat with, and maybe someone to revive your travel instinct again. I have done a lot of independent travelling, and last October I did my 12th trip to Cape Town, I love to go to East and Southern Africa, especially in our winter months as I am not a fan of the cold. I started doing overland trips on a truck with like minded folk, after I had a triple heart bypass in 2001, and have done 5 trips, if you look up a site called Absolute Africa on Google you can read about this form of travel, it is not for everyone as it involves camping, but the sights and smells of Africa make it a real treat. Anyway my name is Terry, I am a fit 75 year old, living in Wigan, having just moved up here from Southampton, I am half Welsh, as my late father was born in a small village near Swansea, and I am here if you want to chat, as you can see I love to chat, take care, and good luck on this site, all best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Finding good new friendsHi Gina, thank you for getting back to me, it’s always nice to get replies. I originally joined this site a few years ago to look for a travel buddy, I had no luck with that so I did a lot of independent travel mostly through East and Southern Africa, a continent that I love, I am lucky to have visited 17 countries in Africa, and next year I hope to go to either Cape Verde or The Gambia, 2 places that I have not been to before. I am on the South Coast of England, and have only visited the States on one occasion, that was in 1966 whilst I was in the Army, we went to an US Army base called Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, I was only 18 at the time and it was a big adventure for me. Well once again, thank you for your reply, and hope to hear from you again, all best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

TRAVELING SOLO AND LOOKING FOR A COMPANION?Hi MariaLV, hope that you are keeping well and looking forward to your move to Puglia, I too am moving from here in Southampton to near Manchester in the first week in July, when I get settled in my friend and I will start planning our next trip, we are usually both solo travelers but we met on this site and this will be the first time that we will travel together, we are deciding on Cape Verde or The Gambia she has been to Cape Verde once before but I haven’t, but I have no preference as to which one we manage to get to, it won’t be until February next year so plenty of time to sort things out. I hope that you manage to get away yourself, then you can add another chapter in your follow up book. So take care, and happy travels, all best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

TRAVELING SOLO AND LOOKING FOR A COMPANION?Hi MariaLV, I think that your latest comment was meant for me, if so thank you for your reply, I was not expecting one, but was pleased to hear from you. It’s funny how we travellers cherish our trips to far flung places, but like you, I am not rich, I only get my pension, and another from my time in the Army. I don’t drink or smoke so I am able to save a bit each month, the problem for me is travel insurance, because of my age and pre existing medical conditions the premiums are expensive, that is why I have had to curtail my overland trips to Africa, instead I now travel independently, and I was in Cape Town last October for 3 weeks, and next February I hope to go with a friend to Cape Verde or The Gambia, so maybe something to look forward to. I was trying to spell the name of the boat that we traveled up and down the Nile on,( I will try again, here goes, Falucca ) I hope that means something to you. Anyway I hope that you continue to enjoy your trips, and I would be pleased to hear about you future plans. So once again a big thank you for your reply, take care, best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

TRAVELING SOLO AND LOOKING FOR A COMPANION?Hi MariaLV, I was interested in your comment on this site, I too have been a solo traveler, I am a man aged 75 and I travel mostly through Africa East and South, I like going on overland trips with like minded people, We meet up in a start point ( usually Nairobi ) and join the truck, we camp on camp sites or do a bush camp, we cook for the whole group in teams of three, so we are on the cook group about once every 8 days, the trips are varied, but we visit many of the famous game parks and sights like Victoria Falls. The company that I travel with is called Absolute Africa you can check them out on Google if you want to know more. I have sailed up and down the Nile between Aswan and Luxor on a traditional dhow, for a few days, but your trip sounds interesting. Anyway I was pleased to hear from an adventurous person like yourself, and wish you many more years of travelling this wonderful world, and good luck with your move to Puglia, best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Anybody out there finding themselves on their ownHi Janet, yes I am well thank you, I think that I chose the wrong words to explain why I left the chat room, it certainly was nothing that you or the rest of the group did to upset me, I just felt a bit helpless that I could do nothing to ease the hurt that you and Jackie were feeling with the loss of your husbands, I of course, have not gone through the same experience that you both have and I could not find the words to comfort you both. I do hope that you are somehow coming to terms with your loss, and that with the help of friends and family life will get better. So please don’t think that you are in anyway at fault, it was only in my head that I thought that the best course of action that I could take, was to leave you to grieve in your own way, I thank you for thinking of me, and I hope that you stay positive and keep well, all love, Terry xViewDate:

Anybody out there finding themselves on their ownHi Jackie, there were a few of us on a chat room a week or so ago, I have since left as I felt a little bit out of the loop, as the main two ladies, Janet and funnily enough another Jackie, they were both recently widowed, and as I have never been married, so have not lost a spouse, I felt for them and tried to bring a bit of fun into the group, but in the end I could no longer feel comfortable, so I left, there were 6 of us in the chat room, and it may still be going strong without me in it, anyway I hope that you get many more reply’s to your comment, and by the way Singapore sounds lovely, but I am an Africa fan myself, and usually do overland trips with a company called Absolute Africa, you can look them up on Google, to see what it’s all about, it may give you some travel ideas, all best wishes, and good luck with everything, Terry.ViewDate:

Just to say hello - [DELETED_MEMBER]Good morning Tia, thank you for your message, I look forward to reading it when I turn my iPad on in the morning. The weather here today is a bit better than it has been just lately, the sun is shining and the wind has eased a bit, but the forecast for tomorrow is not so good, heavy rain and strong winds will be back again, roll on summer. I was pleased to hear that your sponsor dog Gilbert was doing well, my sister has 2 small dogs, they are litter sisters and a cross between a Jack Russel and another breed that I can’t remember, they are 10 years old and very friendly, but they want attention all the time, and follow me around all over the house, still I don’t mind as it’s only for a week. I remember all those old TV programmes from the 70s that you mentioned, I too used to watch them, but I don’t watch a lot of TV now, I tend to listen to my radio instead. My TV licence runs out tomorrow, so will put mine in storage and if there is anything that I want to watch, I will come into our lounge and watch the TV in here. Your air drier sounds brilliant, maybe I should get one, as my cooking leaves a lot to be desired, still I get by. Thank you for your support for my upcoming doctors appointment, but it is only a routine visit, to get an update on my heart condition, I don’t let these things worry me, as I can’t do anything about my condition, just keep taking the pills and carry on as normal. I hope that you are getting a bit more mobile, it would be nice if when the good weather does come, you were able to get out in your garden and go for a short walk, so keep at it, I no it’s silly, but I feel a little bit guilty talking about my holiday plans, when you are stuck in doors due to your mobility issues, still give it time, and you will be off with me on a nice safari in Africa, There something to strive for HaHa. Well I have to do my laundry today, have just been waiting for washing machine to become free and there is one now, so better get in before someone else jumps in, so have a lovely day Tia, take care, Terry.ViewDate:

Just to say hello - [DELETED_MEMBER]Good morning Tia, wow, it took me 10 minutes to read your message haha. I was so pleased to hear that your art class went well, and that you had a good session with lots of new ideas for your art work, I like to hear that there are people who have a special hobby that they like to do, and the enjoyment that it brings, so keep it up, and as I said with practice you will become quite proficient It is wet and windy here again today, I think that things will not improve at least until next week, when it will be April. I do like my pasta dishes, with tuna, chicken in white sauce, or just with cheese. I also like a traditional Sunday roast, but living on my own it’s not often that I get to have one, except when I go to my sisters to dog sit then she does a nice meal for me before they go off on their holiday. I suppose that my favourite colour would be blue, as I always used to buy blue shirts when I was working but since I retired, I now tend to wear a T shirt and jeans, unless I go somewhere where I need to look presentable. I don’t really have a favourite film, but I did like the old Spaghetti westerns mainly for the music. Have you been in contact with any of the other people who responded to your posts? It would be nice to have more strings to your bow. I have a doctors appointment on the 3rd of April, May then get the results from the heart monitor, will have to wait and see. Well had better finish off for now as I have to pop out for bread and milk, So please enjoy the rest of your day, and keep up with the artwork. Take care and stay safe, best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

54 Recently Retired sólo woman travelerHi KatWorldTraveler, I think that you are a woman after my own heart, as I have also been to many countries, my favourite place to travel is Africa, have been to 17 countries there, I love the diversity of the various places, forests, savannas and deserts and of course the wildlife, I usually travel with an overland company like Absolute Africa, the trips are camping, and participating, as we do our own cooking there are up to 28 of us on a truck, and we have the most wonderful time, for a group of people who have never met each other ( unless they join the trip as a couple or in a group ) we get on surprisingly well, Google Absolute Africa and you can see what all the fuss is about. Have never done a cruise, and I live in Southampton, the home of cruise liners. Have also traveled solo, mostly to Cape Town, as I like it there. I may go to Africa again later in the year, as I like to get out of the cold weather, my favourite country is Zambia, followed by Malawi. Hope you get to do more travelling yourself, enjoy the rest of your evening, take care and stay safe, best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Luckily it didn’t cause me to much trouble in bed last night, and all the wires stayed in place. Hope that you have a good day tomorrow at your art class, I’m sure with your flair you will soon get to the level that you want to attain too, and I hope there are a good crowd there. Good on you for sponsoring a little dog, a pity that you are not able to have one in your home just yet, but that time will come I’m sure with your determination to get your health up to speed. Just to say hello - [DELETED_MEMBER]Good afternoon Tia, thank you for your message, I was a bit busy yesterday but have had a quiet day today. Yes when I was young I used to enjoy a family Sunday roast, but I don’t often get to eat one now. I’m pleased that you may get a bit of inspiration from my activity, but your health is paramount, so I hope that in the near future to are able to get out in your garden, and enjoy a more active life. I had a heart attack 22 years ago, and needed a triple heart bypass, so I then decided to do some travelling, and booked to go on an overland trip on a truck with 25 other people that I had never met before, we all met up in Cairo and then traveled through 13 countries in Africa, until we arrived in Cape Town after 18 weeks, It was the best time I have ever had in my life, I have since done another 4 trips, this time they were not so long as the first one. I do like music and have an eclectic taste, I grew up in the 60s so like music from that era, plus I also like the music of Andre Rieu the Dutch violinist and his orchestra and the soloist, very relaxing. I have an appointment at the hospital tomorrow at 3.30 to have a 24 hour heart monitor fitted, the 3rd one in the last year, nothing to worry about, just an inconvenience that’s all. Well better get something to eat, as have had no lunch yet, so enjoy the rest of your weekend, keep your chin up, all best wishes, Terry xViewDate:

Just to say hello - [DELETED_MEMBER]Good afternoon Tia, thank you for your welcome message, I was sorry to hear that you are having mobility problems at the moment, I an still fit and active, so not bad for someone who has just turned 75 years of age, the only thing that I have problems with is my heart, I have heart failure, but I just carry on as usual, I was in Cape Town in South Africa only last October, so it does not stop me doing the things I like to do. I am of to my sisters in Basingstoke next month, dog sitting while she and the brother in law go on a cruise for just over a week, will get me out of my flat for a while. I live in a retirement home, run bu Anchor/ Hanover housing. I have a one bedroom flat here, and have been here for just over2 years There are 33 flats here, and we have a lounge, and a laundry room with 2 washing machines and 2 tumble driers that are free to use, so I do mine once a week. It’s been a very windy day here today, went to Asda do a food shop and nearly got blown over. Hope that you have a good time on your art class, and with a bit of practice I’m sure you will improve you drawing skills, I wish I could be a bit more artistic my father was good at drawing, he liked to draw animals, and kept us amused for hours. Well had better get on and do something, have not had my cup of tea and my sandwich yet, and am feeling a bit hungry, so enjoy the rest of your weekend, and I hope that your mobility improves a bit so you can get out and about a bit more, take care, best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Just to say hello - [DELETED_MEMBER]Good morning Tia, thank you for your message, so nice to hear from you again, we too have a bright sunny start to the day, a nice change after all the rain we had yesterday, I an catching the bus to Winchester today for the market, it’s about an hours bus ride from here in Southampton, so not too long. I have no plans for anything special for the Easter weekend, will just have a quiet day in, as the busses will be on Sunday times, so not so frequent. I do like chocolate, my downfall is my sweet tooth, I am a slave to cakes and biscuits, but if you enjoy something, just go for it, something has got to kill us haha. My favourite food is pasta, ( no Italian blood in our family ) I enjoy it with Tuna and with chicken in white sauce with chopped tomatoes, this is just making me feel hungry, and I have only had a bowl of cereal and a cup of tea for my breakfast. I hope that you get some inspiration from the art program, I love going to so the paintings when I was working in London before I retired, I used to go to the National Gallery and wander the rooms looking at the great art all around, my favourite artist was Titian, I loved his vibrant colours. I am no expert, but I know what I like, and that’s all that matters. Hope that you have a wonderful day, and would enjoy chatting to you again, until then, take care, best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

We 4 is us hired a car and went to Calgary then on to the Banff and Jasper national parks, wonderful scenery and pity we only had 4 days to see it all, am not keen on doing a cruise, prefer terra firma. Anyway my name is Terry, I am 75 years young and am an avid traveler, I live in Southampton the City where a lot of cruise ships leave from. I wish you well in your search, and if you ever find that you would like to travel other than on a ship, would be willing to listen. Once again good luck, all best wishes, Terry.ViewDate:

Looking or frienshipGood afternoon Janet, thank you for the message, I have just got back from Asda in town, quite cold here again today but at least it’s dry. Will be like you, and stay in for the rest of the day, just watch a bit of sport on the TV as usual on a Saturday. When are you off to decamp at your daughters? I hope you have a safe journey what with the bad weather, Yes could be interesting having a travel companion, but early days yet, still will wait and see what happens. Have a good week end, and stay warm, take care, Terry xViewDate:

Looking or frienshipGood afternoon Janet, thank you for giving me the green light to go to Africa on my own, I have a friend ( yes just one ) haha who has just come back from a 2 week trip to Cuba with her friend, she has sent me an email with some photos, and she phoned later, and we had a long chat where she expressed an interest in visiting Cape Town, and wondered if I would be going back there again, I told her that I had no plans for another visit there but would keep an open mind about the idea, early days but will wait and see what might happen at a later date, so may not be going on my own// but of course I will get your approval before I make any plans lol Hope you have had a good day, still a bit wet and windy here at the moment, I think that it will be the same tomorrow, Glad that you liked what you saw of the Jollyboys, yes it is a lovely place to spend a while in, also the town is very friendly, and lots to do in the evening. Well have a good evening, and hope that you don’t get too much in the way of snow, take care, Terry xViewDate:

Looking or frienshipGood morning Janet, thank you for your message, and your concerns about my safety in Africa, have walked with Lions in Zimbabwe and came to no harm, but do not intend to do it on my next trip if I get your approval to go lol❤️ Look up Jollyboys backpack hostel and see for yourself that it is a very safe place. ( you may even buy a backpack and get out of your comfort zone and tag along to hold my hand haha. Raining hard here today, but no snow thank God. Hope that your trip to your daughters goes well, and that the floor job doesn’t take too long so that you can get back to your own home. Yes take your laptop with you and keep up with events on here. Hope you have a good day, and please give me the ok to go off to Africa later this year. Take care, best wishes, Terry xViewDate:

Looking or frienshipHi Janet, thank you for your message, yes a funny old night, just a one off I hope, probably had things on my mind. Sorry to hear that you have had a few sleepless nights as well. Raining here now, so it’s melted all the snow at least for the day. Am looking at going to Africa independently instead of with a tour company, will probably head for Livingstone in Zambia, and stay in a backpackers near Victoria Falls ( it’s called the Jollyboys, yes I know ) but it’s a lovely place to stay at £10 per night ( you can look it up if you Google Backpack Zambia ) Will try and keep to the same dates or near enough, but the one good thing is it won’t be as expensive as with a tour. Well had better find something to do with myself, I could do the same as you and look out of my window at the poor old daffodils. Stay safe and warm, cheers, Terry x
