Christmas the Sequel

Christmas the Sequel

They’d come to worship at the shrine
Of consumerism and bling.
But first they had to park the car.
Not an easy thing.

The hordes had come en masse
From the Cities, hills and dales.
Each one wanting a bargain
For this was the Boxing Day sales.

After all, the mall had been shut
ALL DAY the day before
So, come 9am and on the dot
They were banging on the door.

They poured in like a tidal wave
And invaded everything.
HiFi shops, dress shops, toy shops
To the music of ‘Ker-ching’.

Dosh from the Grandparents
Or maybe Mum and Dad,
The kids said ‘Save it for a rainy day?
Are you barking mad?’

The crowd swelled as the day wore on,
Many a small child was lost
But rounded up by Security
And given back – at a cost.

The din was overwhelming,
The noise was off the scale.
You couldn’t even hear yourself think
Nor a baby wail.

Shoulder to shoulder they shuffled along
Like a wall of Zombies that day
And woe-betide anyone
Who walked the other way.

Even hardened shoppers need a break
A coffee, juice or tea,
A Maccers, pizza, muffin
Or perhaps a KFC.

Queues at the food outlets were miles long
When a bloke at the back shouted ‘FIRE’!
All in front dispersed in fright.
He had the pick of his stomach’s desire.

The pilgrimage was over.
Happy, replete, their Visa cards spent
Only one circumstance could mar
When Dad turned purple and spluttered the words
“Where’ve we parked  the f***ing car?’
