Colour Me Happy

Colour Me Happy

Our world is full of colour, you’ll find it everywhere you look
Today I’m going to find mine in an adult colouring book
And to help me think and focus on this much loved hobby of mine
I’ve poured a glass of Merlot, well, who wants water when there is wine

I’ve got lots of pens and pencils ready, Staedtler is my favoured brand
My colouring book is open and my sharpener is close to hand
The window light is perfect so I can see what I need to see
An afternoon of colouring is the relaxation ahead of me

An Owl sits before me, still and lifeless, as if trapped in a cage
It’s up to me to colour it, and free it from the page
There are vines and leaves and flowers, all intricately outlined
Choosing the colour pallet is now the main thing on my mind

They say there are forty shades of green and fifty shades of grey
So I’m going to be bold and vibrant with my lovely bird of prey
I don’t have real artistic skills, but I can colour between the lines
It’s my chance to be creative with other illustrators designs

The time flies by so quickly, and right before my very eyes
Before I even notice, daylight has turned to darkened skies
It’s easy just to loose yourself as you colour, blend and shade
It’s very therapeutic, all the cares of the world just fade

Some people like to knit and sew or loose themselves within a book
Do crosswords or sudoko, write poetry, or bake and cook
I believe it is important especially in our later years
To keep our minds alive and sharp, and allay those senior moment fears

It’s time to put my pencils down, I’m feeling happy and quite content
The last few hours have, I think, been very beneficially spent
My Owl is now quite ready to spread it’s wings and be set free
So another glass of Merlot is now the treat in store me

I love to write the odd poem when inspired by some event or happening in my own life or that of my family and friends. I usually just write poems for my own pleasure, but I have enjoyed sharing a few of my efforts on Silversurfers and have received some wonderful comments from the community. I enjoy watching Rugby Union. I call myself a 'Hobby Colourist' and enjoy the work of the inky black and white artist Johanna Basford, and I also dabble in photography, in a very amature pastime kind of way.
