Hiraeth

Here’s one for St David’s Day. I am Welsh born and bred, now living over the border in England I often get homesick for the old days. Here are some words I wrote about my childhood home.

Hiraeth

At the Cross of the Cockerel in the Valley of the Crows
Where a Spring gently bubbles and a Fair Oak grows
With green hills surrounding, majestic and proud
Rise music and voices melodic and loud.

Where a warrior king lies buried it seems
This then was my childhood, my Island of Dreams.
Here meadows of flowers chased sweet Summer days
Whilst lanes full of berries saw Autumn’s cool haze
Winter’s fingers of ice and coatings of snow
All melted in Spring for the bluebells to show.

Though now the reality may not be so clear
And rose-tinted glasses cloud judgement I fear
Still deep in my mind that sweet memory prevails
My heart, my soul, my home, my Wales. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿💕
