How Many Poppies?

Here is a short poem I wrote last year in honour of our fallen:

How Many Poppies

How many poppies shall fall today?
A hundred? A thousand? I hear you say…
One for each hero who gave their life:
a husband/son/ father, a daughter/mum/wife.
For monarch and country they gave it their all,
no thought for themselves or their safety at all.
To keep us in freedom, to save us from harm,
so we could live our lives in a country that’s calm.
A thank you to each of those fighters we say,
that’s how many poppies shall fall today.

I'm a mother of four fantastic children (three grown up now) I took up writing again as I became disabled after a paralysing illness and needed a focus. I like to draw and paint to keep my hands busy and moving, and writing keeps my brain cells stretched, keeping the old cogs working. Of course it also keeps me out of mischief. Much love Cate
