If

If

If I could turn back time, it would have to be,
To when there was just my dog, and me,
To when life was simple, and not so sad,
Because then I still had my mam and my dad.

All was before me, nothing behind,
With my dog I could roam, to discover and find,
To sort out my life, in the way it would be,
To grow, and to learn, to be young, to be free.

To learn about nature, to play as a boy,
With something I had made, not a shop bought toy,
To be with my friends in the clear open air,
From daylight till night time, just playing out there.

If I could wander with ‘Floss’, on the common once more,
Or to see her sweet face as she came through the door,
And to sing with my mates round a camp – fire, and then,
That is all I would ask for – just to be there again!

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
