Ode to lockdown

Ode to lockdown

So many things are out of our reach
A stroll to the pub a walk on the beach
We cannot wander nor can we roam
Just sit in the garden or stay in our home

What can we do to pass every hour
Into the larder and bring out the flour
Skirt, potato and onion, turnip or swede
Make a gert pasty, just what we need

Pasties are made and looking alright
Now for glass of cold bottled white
As I reach in the fridge it gives my spine tingles
To go with the wine a handful Pringles

Three weeks of lockdown stuck in the house
With nobody else but my tolerant spouse
Gallons of coffee, enough for a lake
Couple of biscuits and a large slice of cake

Will we regret what we drank and ate
Now alcoholic, and well overweight
We miss all our travels or just catching the bus
At the end of day it’s not about us

Doctors and nurses, carers and workers
Working long tiring shifts, none of them shirkers.
We owe them so much, their lives on line
As they turn up again time after time.

When this is all over as it will be
Let’s open our eyes, so we can see
All of the heroes, from all walks of life
Who guided us through this moment of strife.

It is not about them nor about us
It is about everyone, so don’t make a fuss
Whatever your views, whatever your race
Just stick with the rules and keep us all safe.
