The Long Wait

The long Wait

Today I’ve seen you once again
It’s been one month and one year
You’ve been strong and held on for me
I’ve longed and waited for this day

But what you now see
I do not know
Are you thinking or feeling
As your brain melts like snow

Those eyes are empty
Gone is the bright light
Muscle tone is weak
Are you waiting for night

It was a joy to see you
But my heart skipped more than once
I hugged and I kissed you
But got no response

Your dementia moved along
But COVID blocked our road
Halted our sojourn together
We just travelled alone

As we bided our time
For this precious date
It suddenly dawned
Life is but a wait
