The Mantlepiece

This poignant poem was written by Martin Silvester …

He said “Thought I would write one for Mother’s Day for all the people..like me..who no longer have mums. Hope it’s not too sad”

The Mantlepiece

I shed a tear, because you’re not here,
It’s that time of year again.
And I shed a tear, when I go for a walk,
Along my memory lane.

To hear your voice, to hear your laugh,
To give you a Mother’s Day kiss,
How I wish I could move, the hands of life’s clock,
Back to the years, that I miss.

The cards in the shops, the flowers for sale,
Are for children to buy for their mums.
Times set aside and lunches are booked,
For when Mothering Sunday comes.

Oh to smell your perfume, to give you a hug,
To catch up with all family news.
To take you down to the coast again,
Or listen to each other’s views.

I think of the things that you loved,
Like the card you received on the day.
It would still be there on the mantelpiece,
All the way through till May.

I remember the pleasure, you showed with a smile,
When you sat down, for your special treat.
The effort you’d made, with your make up and hair,
New dress, plus new shoes on your feet.

If I close my eyes, I can still see your face,
And you’re warm, safe and snug in my heart.
Happy Mother’s Day mum, I’ll love you forever,
You’re still here, even though we’re apart.

Not a lot to tell...just an ordinary man...always loved writing but never had the time until now...hope I've got a few years left to write about the million things I would like to get down on paper be it in poetry form or just plain old story telling. Just in case anyone would like me to come along to their group and read a few of my poems live..I would be happy to do so within the confines of Kent or Sussex...I would just need to cover my time and petrol costs...plus a cup of tea and a biscuit. Just email [email protected] To answer some of your questions= ex-army..ex -jackeroo...ex-builder..ex-quite a few other things..still rocking...married...2 + 3 children...7 grandchildren...retired...love custard creams. I have now published my first collection of poems which are now available on Amazon under the title of..LAST APPLE ON THE TREE. The book consists of twenty seven poems covering a wide range of topics and emotions. My second book has just been published and is called A BREEZE IN THE WILLOWS, also available on Amazon. I hope that everyone will get as much enjoyment reading them, as I did writing them.

I miss my lovely Mum all the time , I also miss my lovely daughter who was also a Mummy to two little boys , Mother's Day will never be the same for me , but the love never dies and I can still hear both their voices when I close my eyes and listen and I hope I always will .
We will spend the day with our other daughter and her family, so new memories are being made for us to look back on as well as the lovely memories of a world with my Mum and daughter in it .
I love your poems , they say so much X
