We Heard the Birds Sing

We Heard the Birds Sing

It was a long spring…
Confined in our apartments, care homes, houses,
Alone or with partners or parents or spouses,
And we heard the birds sing

It was a long spring…
We watched graphs and graphics and learned new rules,
While teachers went online to support the home schools,
And we heard the birds sing

It was a long spring…
Then Lizzii and Ellis from their garden serenaded us on screen,
While we sang Happy Birthday twice to keep our hands clean,
And we heard the birds sing

It was a long spring…
But Lynn in her bus collected for the Food Banks,
While we clapped every Thursday to send the workers thanks,
And we heard the birds sing

It was a long spring,
We baked a lot, took daily exercise, Tom walked, hair grew,
While we hoped the ventilated folk would manage to pull through,
And we heard the birds sing

It was a long spring…
The arrival of food deliveries became the new treat,
While we weeded beds and edged the lawn to make them look neat,
And we heard the birds sing

It was a long spring…
Hannah organised us on Facebook to support the isolation,
While the TV broadcast daily deaths to inform the population,
And we heard the birds sing

It was a long spring,
But in June they released us a little, uncoiled our time inside with small concessions,
While we wondered if mankind had learned its virus centred lessons,
And we heard the birds sing
