Would you like to see the railways re-nationalised?

Jeremy Corbyn has spoken of re-nationalising the UK’s railways, and the case for national ownership of such a crucial piece of a country’s infrastructure is the source of much debate.

But the evidence suggests that integrating the UK’s expensive and fragmented rail network under public ownership could save hundreds of millions and also provide a better service.

The latest two YouGov Surveys indicate majority support for taking rail back into public ownership. Opposition to the idea has fallen from March to August.

The overwhelming reason for this is a belief that rail fares would go down as a result. A YouGov Survey of 2014 found the top three reasons for re-nationalising the railways were that:

  • Railways would be accountable to the taxpayer rather than shareholders;
  • Rail fares would go down;
  • It would be more cost effective overall.

What are your views?  How often do you use trains? Have you seen an improvement in rail services since they have been privatised? Are you happy with the service you currently receive? Would re-nationalising the railways be backward step?

Would you like to see the railways re-nationalised?

YES ,YES and it cannot come soon enough all what these tories brought in to help their friends make even more money at the expense of Stealing/Robbing the great British public left right and centre while smiling right into your face. As for you ( red head swift) i do not know where you do your journeys but come up past Birmingham they are filthy, late ,unreliable , i acknowledge your comment about strikes but will argue the fact that they are no way as bad as they were once ,so lets ,let the government do what we elect them to do and thats run all our utilities for us ,owned by us, and for us .

I remember the old nationalised railways. For many years I used them to go back and forth to work. The trains were dirty, unreliable, and unpleasant. Strikes were common and the safety record was very poor. London main line stations were gloomy, dirty and there were no shops or facilities for passengers.

Today the trains are clean, many are air conditioned and have on board catering and wi-fi. No wonder the trains are so full. The London main main line stations are bright, clean and full of shops.

We cannot go back. There are many things that the private sector does so much better than the state. Can you imagine the railways being run by the type of management that controls HMRC.

I think you are right especially with regards to HMRC. They do not even answer their phones. Having said that I went to Manchester the other day on Virgin Trains in F class as it was only £20 more than economy at off peak periods so a real deal. The train was clean and staff very friendly. On the way back at 1pm I got sandwiches, countless cups of tea, fruit and it was very busy. Quiet a lot of "Silversurfers" on there obviously making use of the cheaper train fares for that period. Very very impressed and both trains exactly on time.

All of the 'private' railway companies are subsidised by us -the taxpayer- by millions of pounds annually. Far more than BR cost.
So we pay taxes. The government pays the TOCS. And the TOCS pay their shareholders. Madness.

I would like to see all public transport become nationalised along with water, electric and gas.

Yes I agree as when they were all nationalised suddenly the management got paid x times as much plus shares etc etc and I do not think the service we get is any better now

Why is it necessary for the railways to make a profit. They are a service and should be seen as that with any shortfall made good by the government.

I agree with you. Priority one is safety. If there was proper competition like with airlines that's fine but there doesn't seem to be at the moment.

Believe railways easier to administrate while under the control of one entity. Also negotiations easier to hold.

Trains seem run so much better abroad, why is that? I can't grumble as if I travel with my son (once in a blue moon) to London, from Weymouth, it's only £5 return! as a works perk! Can't beat that price £2.50 return!! Nice when get the chance.

No way, there was no investment last time and with financial shortages where would funds come from for the future? We don't want the unions in control again

" When you say 'we'. are you using the royal 'we'? Or are you arrogantly claiming to know what everyone else thinks? Are you opposed to 'professional' unions as well? You know, dentists, architects, doctors, engineers, et al. All unions are made up of members of society, and reflect every side of human behaviour. i.e. from bad to good and everything in between. Or are you a still drinking the Thatcher gin - you know, the person who fatuously claimed, "There is no such thing as 'society'"?

I agree we do not want the unions in control again. (By we I mean many of the British people). The UK was in a shambles when all the unions wanted was to go on strike. Look at the car industry in the UK in the 70s-a total joke

When I say we I mean me and my friends and family. We saw the mess the unions got us into pre Thatcher and whilst I don't agree with everything she did she certainly released the country from the disastrous grip of the unions.

Good unions are great fro the country but not when they become bigger and all powerful for their own purposes and not those of their members.

Neither the government nor the unions are capable of running the railways as money would not be dedicated to the infrastructure and future development which is what is needed long term.

The big mistake governments make is failing to consult with unions when they propose major changes. They will never learn. Unions of all types can and should help to improve services for all with particular concern for their members. They must be prepared to change their long term habits for the good of all.

Mr. Corbyn needs to think a lot more creatively than that old line. He's living in the seventies, strikes and stinking rubbish, disharmony and health problems for the populous. NO WAY! - NO CORBYN.

I remember the days of British Rail. The delays, the cancellations, the absolute lack of customer service. The dirty old fashioned dirty stations, trains and toilets. You can't turn the clock back.

No toilets in stations nowadays. Except in the big mainline stations and there it costs a lot more than 1p for a pee.

Its an impossible dream! The cost would be enormous as they would have to be bought back and foreign companies and shareholders would have to be compensated. However th other countries have nationalised railways that are highly efficient. Its a pleasure to travel in Switzerland!

what cost. The railways are run as a franchise, they are still owned by us. We just don't offer to renew the franchise. No compensation necessary. The private companies have made enough from us already. They will also save having to pay all the fines they keep getting for running a sloppy service

I agree about the Swiss railways Judyap, if the train is due to leave at 1.13pm then it leaves at 1.13pm, on the dot and they are NEVER late pulling into the station. Brilliant

Nationalise each franchise when it runs out, no cost involved for the business. Rolling stock would need to be purchased of course.

No way. If you used the railways when they were nationalised and suffered awful customer service, poor timekeeping, dreadful rolling stock and general inefficiency, why would you want to go back to it. Maybe, it would be good to go back to a much expanded network but little else.

Some of the railways now are good-while some are terrible. It would make sense to re-nationalise to me and have standard trains and invest in the railways. I think we need a couple of circular railways lines round London connecting Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton etc and some of the major towns...bit like a bicycle wheel with a hub and spokes all connecting up. Would help traffic and only a British Rail-ie one company could run it

Re-Nationalise the railways! I can remember British Rail was a bit of a disaster but we live near Clapham and the junction is apparently the busiest in the UK and probably in the world. The train traffic is busy but it has always worked. What I have never understood with the privatisation of the railways is how on earth can a railway be competitive when its the same company running trains on a certain line...ie South Western. If we had multiple companies on one line thats a different thing but the priority needs to be safety and I don't think this would be safe. So yes re-nationalise the Railways and water and electricity. No I do not support Corbyn! But he is talking a bit of commonsense here
