Rough Guides Must See Destinations for 2017
The travel experts behind Rough Guides have put together a list of their must see destinations for 2017.
If you’re ready to say goodbye to winter and plan your next adventure, seek inspiration from the most exciting countries on the globe today.
Scotland
If you want a Staycation rather than a Vacation, you’ll be pleased to know Scotland is number two on the list of must-see destinations this year. With vibrant cities, exciting festivals, and incredible tourist trails like the North Coast 500 coastal route, you can take in a little bit of everything. Fly into Edinburgh or Glasgow and then hire a car or jump on a tour bus and explore the stunning landscapes of the Highlands – and its whiskey distilleries, too.
Canada
Another firm favourite with travellers at anytime is Canada, so no surprise it made the Rough Guides list for 2017. From the spectacular wilderness to world famous landmarks and bustling cities, Canada offers nearly an endless list of experiences. Don’t expect to do it all in one go – the country is vast, and if you have just one or two weeks to spare you’re best to stick with one area. Each of the country’s coasts has plenty to offer – explore the Rocky Mountains and wilds of the West Coast or discover the country’s maritime history and stunning red sands on the East Coast. For culture, head to Quebec City and Montreal and discover Canada’s French heritage, or stop by Toronto and discover why it’s lately known as North America’s most talked-about city.
Portugal
Portugal is poised to be one of Europe’s most sought after holiday destinations over the next few years. Tourism here is booming – the coasts and countryside are beautiful, easy and inexpensive to explore, while thriving creative industries in cities like Lisbon offer a truly unique cosmopolitan experience. Add to that great weather year-round and low hotel prices and you have a destination you can enjoy to the full – even on a modest budget.
Finland
While the other Scandic countries tend to get more recognition, Finland has just as much to recommend it as Sweden or Denmark. This year, the country is celebrating 100 years of independence, and to mark the occasion the whole country is turning out in its Sunday Best. Visit this year and you can find a series of wonderful festivals, events and expeditions that celebrate every aspect of Finnish culture.
Bolivia
Despite its incredible beauty, Bolivia is often overlooked when travellers explore South America. It’s worth a closer look – the country boasts some of the most incredible scenery in the world, from the Bolivian Amazon jungle to the staggering and oddly surreal salt flats at Salar de Uyuni. This is a great destination for anyone interested in trekking or eco-tourism – there’s dozens of initiatives around the country to help you have a sustainable getaway.
