Free knitting patterns: where to look online

Knitting is a challenging and inexpensive way to get creative.

And with the added bonus of being able to make everything from clothing to gifts and things for around the home, it’s little wonder it has been a popular pastime for hundreds of years.

Whether you’re a master of cardigans or just embarking on your first scarf, there’s never been a better time to be a knitter. The more popular knitting gets, the more websites crop up offering specialty yarns, knitting tips and even free patterns.

If you’re looking for some inspiration for your next knitting project, head to these websites and take advantage of fantastic online knitting resources, including free, downloadable patterns.

KnittingHelp.com

This popular site has a massive directory of free knitting patterns—enough to keep you busy for years. It also features free knitting tutorial videos, an online shop (for all your knitting needle needs) and an active message board where you can swap ideas with fellow knitters from across the globe.

Knit Rowan

Yorkshire-based luxury yarn brand Rowan has a reputation among knitters for its gorgeous, modern designs. If you register on their website, you can download a lot of their patterns for free.

Knit Picks

This yarn and knitting supply retailer, based in Washington State in the US, has one of the best collections of interesting knitting patterns available online. Although they don’t yet ship their products outside the US or Canada, they do allow anyone to download their free knitting patterns, such as this charming snowman draft excluder and ABC baby blanket.

UK Hand Knitting Association

The UKHKA is Britain’s go-to authority on all things knitting related. Its website also happens to feature a user-friendly pattern directory, which is organised by season or occasion so that you can easily plan your next project. For example, you can browse their recommended patterns for Christmas, Valentine’s Day or just winter in general.

Pinterest

Social image sharing site Pinterest has quickly become a brilliant resource for anyone who likes to design, sew, crochet or knit. Searching the site for “free knitting patterns” will bring up loads of inspiring photos of trendy, handmade knitwear. Clicking on the photo you like will direct you to the website it came from, where you can download the pattern for yourself. If you’d like a bit of a head start, check out this comprehensive collection of free knitting patterns compiled by a fellow knitting enthusiast.

Ravelry

Ravelry is an inclusive, friendly website for knitters, crocheters, spinners, weavers, and dyers. You need to create a free account which will then allow you full access.

They are made up of millions of yarn lovers from all over the world. Ravelry provides a personal notebook for fiber artists to keep track of their projects, yarns & fibers, tools, and pattern library, a rich database of patterns and yarns, and a community with thousands of forums and groups to connect with other Ravelers over any interest you could think of.
