Indoor exercise ideas for winter
If the winter weather has disrupted your daily walk, not to worry – there’s plenty of other things you can do to stay fit and healthy from the warmth of indoors.
Use the winter as an opportunity to shake things up and try something new – it’s a great chance to meet new people and maybe even discover a new hobby, too.
Pilates is a great low-impact exercise that can help strengthen up your muscles and can be done at home or at a local studio. If you’ve never tried it before, learn more about it and how you can get started in our Best of the Web article.
Like Pilates, Yoga is low-impact and a great way to help your body stay strong and flexible. Yoga is as much about the mind as the body, so it can be a great stress reliever too. Find out more about discovering the joys of yoga and consider signing up to a local class – there are great beginner courses out there where teachers can help you master the beginning poses so you can continue your practice at home.
Weight training isn’t just a young person’s game – keeping your muscles strong will help you feel your best throughout winter. If you have a local gym or Crossfit studio, consider getting involved with a circuit club or working with a personal trainer – it’s low impact and great for burning fat. If you prefer to do your exercise at home, a kettlebell workout is a great alternative. You need just one or two pieces of equipment rather than a whole set of weights and can use it for a full body workout. Find out more about kettlebells here.
Swimming is gentle on the joints, making it an incredibly useful way to get some aerobic exercise in. Your local pool or fitness centre will offer free swim where you can go and swim lengths. If this isn’t your style, water aerobics – also known as Aqua Fit – can be a fun thing to do too. Read more about the benefits of swimming here.
Aerobics classes are a great way to get out and meet some new people if you’re socialising less in the winter. Classes like Zumba have the advantage of being challenging but also fun – you get to dance to music for an hour and learn samba, salsa, merengue steps while you’re at it. Learn more about it here.
