The View

This beautifully descriptive poem was written by Martin Silvester … it is featured in his first book of poems called Last Apple on The Tree

THE VIEW

I sit on the hilltop and look at the view,
Horizon blending, into hazy blue.
A gentle breeze, just ruffles my hair,
I look up at the sky, is there anyone there?

Sheep on the hillside, graze between rocks,
Cows in low pastures, in black and white frocks.
Small whitewashed cottages, scattered around,
A beautiful landscape, not making a sound.

I sit and I look, peace descends on my brain,
And I’m glad I came back, to the hilltop again.
Trees in the valley, slopes wearing green grass,
Fluffy white clouds, changing shape as they pass.

Rooks in the distance, circle and weave,
It’s time to go, but I don’t want to leave.
How many people, from our distant past,
Have gazed at this view, magnificent and vast.

The hills and the valleys, have been here for ever,
Shaped by the ice age and all kinds of weather.
If we go, Mother Nature, so wild and so free,
Will return the landscape, to what it should be.

Concrete will crumble, houses will fall,
Green grass will creep, over roadway and wall.
Anger and warfare, trouble and strife,
We’ve brought on ourselves, since man first saw life.

Oh why can’t we see, all the beauty and wonder,
That this world has to offer, why tear it asunder.
If we thumb through the leaves, from natures own book,
Co-existence and peace, are there, if we look.

In far flung galaxies, that are way beyond sight,
IS there a world, where people don’t fight.
We just can’t be alone, floating here in space,
Will the future bring meetings, face to face.

This won’t be possible, unless we get a grip,
They’ll find an empty world, at the end of their trip.
So let’s all pull together, because it’s true,
If we don’t pull together, we’ll ALL lose the view.

Not a lot to tell...just an ordinary man...always loved writing but never had the time until now...hope I've got a few years left to write about the million things I would like to get down on paper be it in poetry form or just plain old story telling. Just in case anyone would like me to come along to their group and read a few of my poems live..I would be happy to do so within the confines of Kent or Sussex...I would just need to cover my time and petrol costs...plus a cup of tea and a biscuit. Just email [email protected] To answer some of your questions= ex-army..ex -jackeroo...ex-builder..ex-quite a few other things..still rocking...married...2 + 3 children...7 grandchildren...retired...love custard creams. I have now published my first collection of poems which are now available on Amazon under the title of..LAST APPLE ON THE TREE. The book consists of twenty seven poems covering a wide range of topics and emotions. My second book has just been published and is called A BREEZE IN THE WILLOWS, also available on Amazon. I hope that everyone will get as much enjoyment reading them, as I did writing them.
