DO YOU LOVE CORNWALL? I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOUSorry I no longer live in Cornwall, but I lived in Perranuthnoe, near St Michael's Mount, for 8 years and now live in Shropshire. I miss it terribly and would go back tomorrow. There is something special about Cornwall, isn't there?ViewDate:

Awake at nightHi granonthego I did mention to the owner of this site that a private messaging service would be appreciated. I guess the alternative is to post a link to our Facebook page and use that for messages?ViewDate:

Changes in tasteJust reading a book called Fat Planet by David Lewis which reinforces much of what you say. Doesn't stop me eating rubbish though. It is just too convenient and tasty to resist, which is what the food industry relies on. Next book to read is Tescopoly, by Andrew Simms!ViewDate:

What book are you currently reading?I have read almost all of Peter Ackroyd's books and really enjoyed them. Also liked the Dissolution series by CJSansom. Currently reading the Kit Cat Club by Ophelia Field, about an early gentleman's club. Not what you would call a light read, but interesting nonetheless. I love anything to do with English history /heritage.ViewDate:

What book are you currently reading?I love history too, but generally the Georgians and later. I am thoroughly enjoying Chocolate Wars, by Deborah Cadbury at the moment. It does keep tempting me to nibble chocolate, though :)ViewDate:

Health and adviceYes, I have come to a similar conclusion. Eat as good a mixture of things as you can, eat what you enjoy and keep as active as you can doing all the things you really want to do. I think life is too short to do otherwise.ViewDate:

Changes in tasteSeems true to me. I have acquired the taste for Marmite, Brussels sprouts & strong coffee and lost the taste for sherbert flying saucers, sugar sandwiches & orange fizzy pop :)ViewDate:

Firework nightYes, Bonfire Night was one of the highlights of our year too. My Dad sold fireworks in his hardware shop so we got all the leftovers :) It was a real party atmosphere with jacket potatoes and bangers, Catherine Wheels on the shed & Jumping Jacks chasing Mum round the garden. No thoughts of health & safety then? We had a huge Bonfire with a guy dressed in Dad's cast-offs. No worries about being pc , either.ViewDate:

Law, Order and PunishmentWilf, if you haven't read it, I think you would enjoy Jon Gaunt's book, Gaunty's Best of British. I just finished it and agree with much of what he says, if not always his way of expressing it.ViewDate:

Alcohol dependencyThanks sally, I have just seen the link and voted. It seems that you can't win whatever you post. I don't envy your position. My Mother has advanced dementia and didn't drink much until her later years. I can't say whether or not the booze accelerated her condition but it certainly added to her confusion and she seems far more lucid since her supply of alcohol has been withdrawn.ViewDate:

Alcohol dependencyOf course advocating heavy drinking would be wrong, but the promotion of booze is everywhere in our society and to pick out this very balanced site as blameworthy is a pity. We know that alcohol is an addictive poison but it is so socially acceptable (almost a requirement?) and this is what needs to change. It happened with smoking so maybe it will come.ViewDate:

Newbie! - [DELETED_MEMBER]Hi Dancerupstairs! Thanks for your reply. Tonkinese cats are half Siamese & half Burmese. They are quite vocal and very friendly and rather rule the roost here. :) Postcrossing is a hobby which involves the random sending/receiving of postcards all over the world [see Postcrossing.com] We started walking seriously when we bought Fitbits earlier this year and started logging foods and trying to lose weight. I actually reached my goal weight this week to much rejoicing and cheesecake all round :) I have a Clavinova piano but little skill, sadly. Dancing & writing poetry are things I have never attempted. I do love reading though - historical novels, chick lit, travelogues, popular science, classics, the more the merrier :) Oh, here is a link to my Facebook page as there doesn't seem to be a messaging system here yet. https://www.facebook.com/sue.munday.12ViewDate:

Newbie! - [DELETED_MEMBER]I'm new here too and it seems awfully quiet. I wonder if we should try posting our interests? Mine are English history & heritage, Tonkinese cats, caravanning, reading widely, listening to music [from Handel to the Beatles, Elgar to Al Stewart, Bing Crosby to Gilbert & Sullivan,] Postcrossing, Geocaching, walking, [especially canals & disused railways,] cooking and eating out, chatting on Facebook, - to name but a few... :) How about you?ViewDate:

I have found that it has expanded my reading list and provided endless entertaining lists of ideas. https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/31719036-sooz888 If anyone shares my taste in reading, please feel free to add me as a 'friend' there.ViewDate:

Getting out of the houseAs we gave up drinking earlier this year, we've been avoiding pubs, but our solution has been to trawl TripAdvisor for well reviewed independent cafes and we've found some little gems. My favourite so far was undoubtedly, 'A Great Little Place,' in Southport. it is an Autism Ventures enterprise with a happy atmosphere and the most wonderful range of homemade cakes. There are so many wonderful local non-chain cafes working so hard to succeed in a world of Starbucks and Cafe Neros.ViewDate:

The Millennium - stereotyping of both elderly people and young students*Chuckle* Well said Cyberwrinkly! Yes, all my life I think I had preconceived ideas about what 'elderly' folk should be like and now I am one they have all gone out of the window. I saw some pics of my college reunion this weekend and thought, 'Goodness, who are all those old people?' I never had kids and can honestly say I feel like the same person I was at 19 when I studied with all those 'oldies.' I wonder if people ever do come to terms with being 'old,' or if it's just me?ViewDate:

Dieting - it just 'clicked'I have had a very similar experience this year. In February I gave up drinking alcohol, then in April bought a Fitbit and started walking 10 to 12 miles every day. Then I started logging foods on Myfitnesspal.com and trying to lost weight. Everything just 'clicked,' as you say, and I hope to reach the magic 8 stone goal at the end of next week. After 50 years of being over weight I feel I have finally cracked it :) I am delighted to read of another success story and wish you luck on your continued journey.ViewDate:

Has the magic of Christmas diminished? The over-commercialisation of Christmas hasn't quite killed off the magic for me. I don't have children or grand-children but I still start, at this time of the year to anticipate playing Christmas music, seeking out Christmas treats of food and scouring the Radio Times for little festive gems.ViewDate:

Childhood HolidaysI guess I was lucky. My twelve days annual holiday to a different seaside resort each year were the high point of my year and even now I cherish wonderful memories of Weymouth, Southsea, Lowerstoft, Bournmouth, Llandudno and the rest. [Maybe I just forgot the tedious bits?]ViewDate:

What book are you currently reading?I'm reading Middlemarch again and love Eliot, Hardy & Mrs Gaskell. I have enjoyed a few completely different offerings lately, though. Time Warped by Claudia Hammond, [about our perception of time,] and Proust & the Squid, by Maryanne Wolf, [about the brain and reading.] Also currently enjoying Life on the High Teas [in search of Middle England,] by Stuart Maconie. I'm catching up with all the reading I have wanted to do for many years and loving retirement.ViewDate:

Alcohol dependencyJanemarie, I can understand why someone would become desperate enough to suggest that, but I do know that in my case it didn't work. My love of the booze was so strong that I thought if my partner wouldn't accept me as I was, I would rather we separated. Now in the clear light of sobriety, I realise how selfish I was being, but you can't tell people. They have to see it for themselves!ViewDate:

Alcohol dependencyI do sympathise. I am 62, femail, and until February 6th this year I drank the equivalent of at least a bottle of wine most days, but usually in larger 'binges,' 2 or 3 times a week. It was damaging our relationship but I feared not drinking would be empty & boring and didn't want to face socialising or special occasions with booze. Then a friend recommended Jason Vale's book, 'Kick the drink...Easily' and something clicked. I gave up overnight, have lost 3 stones, walk 10-12 miles a day and feel so much better. I am still telling myself I can drink whenever I want, but I'm choosing not to at the moment. So far it is working. All the best to you both and I hope you find a solution soon.ViewDate:

I would like to make new friends for general conversation onlyI am new here, female, aged 62 and happily settled with my partner in the Shropshire hills. I would love to chat about English history & heritage, caravanning, all kinds of music, books of all genres, cats, food and the joys of being retired. I don't see a facility for exchanging personal messages on this site. Maybe I missed it?ViewDate:

The battle of the supermarkets'Best value' does necessarily equate to 'cheapest. I think Tesco offers the best range of choices to suit all tastes & pockets. I still prefer to use independent shops where possible, though.ViewDate:

Do we drink too much in the UK?I have drunk far too much alcohol all my life and never thought I would be able to give it up. This February 6th I did just that and rather than being 'boring & empty' as I'd imagined, my life has never been fuller or more interesting. I am 62 and wish I had taken this step years ago!ViewDate:
