Christmas

Christmas

Do you remember me the child who sat on your knee.
Do you recall me whispering in your ear of dolls and teddy bears.
I was so small back then.
I am grown now and I see you around at this time of year.
You look at me as though remembering.
The child I was.
I am grown now with children of my own.
I see the look of wonder in their eyes
At all the toys in the stores.

I run around busy each day to try and earn
A pound or two.
I sigh and wonder how to pay for it all.
Christmas dinner to cook and presents to wrap.
New clothes to buy the house to decorate.
Run off my feet.

But Christmas Eve comes at last.
I sit by the fireside cosy and warm..
The children fast asleep and presents under the tree.
I close my eyes and fall to slumber.
A noise ever so gentle rouses me
I open an eye.

Am I still dreaming or did I just hear
A ho ho ho and the sound of sleigh bells.
I drift to sleep once more
Happy to know it’s Christmas once more.
Merry Christmas.
